Beginning this Friday, May 13th through May 15th, Sourcebooks is offering the eBook edition Michael Malone’s Four Corners of the Sky for FREE wherever eBooks are sold! Take advantage of this great opportunity to read Malone’s most recent, acclaimed novel.

“Fans of Malone’s 1986 picaresque bestseller Handling Sin have something to celebrate with Four Corners of the Sky… A former soap opera writer, Malone understands the art of great storytelling: There’s humor and action aplenty, but Four Corners is also a warmhearted Iook at how we love and forgive. Five hundred and forty-four pages never seemed so short.” —People (4 STARS, People Pick)

In small towns between the North Carolina Piedmont and the coast the best scenery is often in the sky. On flat sweeps of red clay and scrub pine the days move monotonously, safely, but above, in the blink of an eye, dangerous clouds can boil out of all four corners of the sky…The flat slow land starts to shiver and anything can happen.

In such a storm, on Annie Peregrine’s seventh birthday, her father gave her the airplane and minutes later drove out of her life. Thus begins an enchanting novel that bursts with energy from the first pages, and sweeps you off on a journey of unforgettable characters, hilarious encounters, and haunting secrets.

The Four Corners of the Sky is master storyteller Michael Malone’s new novel of love, secrets, and the mysterious bonds of families. Malone brings characters to life as only he can, exploring the questions that defy easy answers: Is love a choice or a calling? Why do the ties of family bind so tightly? And is forgiveness a gift to others…or a gift we give ourselves? – FROM SOURCEBOOKS

Did you know that this week was “Children’s Book Week”? I’m a bit behind in sharing about this week considering it is already Thursday but there’s still time to celebrate it. In fact, we should be celebrating it all the time but with all great things, it’s good to be publicly reminded of the importance of kids reading and/or being read to.

A little background about the week…Back in 1913, Franklin K. Matthiews, a librarian from The Boy Scouts of America, believed that kids could be influenced greatly by books and thus wanted to promote higher standards in children’s books. He proposed “Children’s Book Week”, which was originally celebrated in November around Thanksgiving but later changed to May in 2008. Since 1944, the Book Council has been coordinating events and providing tools to publishers, schools, libraries, teachers, and bookstores to help promote “Children’s Book Week” nationwide.

The week is often celebrated with tons of writing and reading activities for kids. There of course are plenty of visits from children’s authors all over to share the love of reading. Activities and events are typically found in bookstores, libraries, and schools during these times. My kids school is currently celebrating with wacky events each day this week along with hosting their annual book fair and this afternoon we’ll be heading over to our local library for some more activities.

As a mother of 3 kids (5,10, and 11), I of course wanted to find something fun to do with the kids in celebration of book week. Thankfully, like me, they LOVE and DEVOUR books. In fact, they’ve recently started their own book blog called BookSnatchers.

Though I am from Raleigh, I wanted to share what the Durham library is doing tomorrow night in celebration of “Children’s Book Week”. The kids will be creating their own books and given a book! What fun that will be! If I wasn’t working and the kids weren’t in school tomorrow, I’d take them myself but unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year. However, I do plan on doing this from home with the kids and we’ll also make our own bookmarks for their books. It may even be more fun to have them alternate sentences and just write one book together.

Event Type: Children
Date: 5/6/2011
Start Time: 2:30 PM
End Time: 3:15 PM
Description: Celebrate National Children’s Book Week (May 2-8). What better way to celebrate “Children’s Book Week” than to make your very own book. All necessary materials will be provided. Children may bring personal pictures, clippings and text to include in their books. Along with their own creation each child will be given a free book to add to their personal collection.

I still remember my first book that I read and drew from as a young reader. Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat. It’s still a classic today and I even STILL have that book AND that drawing. How about Dick, Jane, and Spot? That trio is still around and a great beginners read!

As I got older, Dr. Seuss was replaced by Nancy Drew, the Sweet Valley Twins, the Babysitter’s Club, R.L.Stine, and then as a teen I enjoyed works by V.C. Andrews, Stephen King, and Anne Rice. As a young adult, V.C. Andrews was replaced by Nora Roberts, Sabrina Jeffries, Sue Monk Kidd, and Alice Hoffman. Today I’d say I’m pretty eclectic in my taste of books and enjoy discovering new authors. I enjoy horror, romance, paranormal, historical, inspirational, leading ladies in non-fiction, and self-improvement books, I still have my favorite books adorning my shelves in hardback “forever”: No Woman So Fair, Redeeming Love, Misery, Aesop’s Fables, Mayfair Witch series, The 13th Tale, Diary of Ellen Rimbauer. I’ve always been one of those readers that once hooked with a book, I MUST read ALL by that author (and of course HAVE all the books).

How about you? What books did you grow up with?

This week’s question comes from Ellie who blogs at Musings of a Bookshop Girl:

“If I gave you £50 (or $80) and sent you into a bookshop right now, what would be in your basket when you finally staggered to the till?”

You would definitely find me in 2 of my favorite bookstores. First I’d be at my local Raleigh Edward McKay Used Books & More (because why pay full price for a good book when it’s available for much less). If I couldn’t find everything there, I’d then head over to Barnes & Noble (because well that bookstore just pure rocks and then I could do other reading for free on my Nook Color or in hand while I sip coffee and eat some coffee cake). If I can’t find them in the store, at least there’s B&N online where I know I can find these even as used copies. Yes, not many people realize that B&N has used books too. It’s ok, I didn’t either until not too long ago.

So my list of books? Hmmm…so hard to choose from so many books! But since I’m a hardback freak for my favorite books or for beautifully designed covers…As you can see below, ALL are fiction, simply because I LOVE fiction.

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris (This one has been the hardest for me to find but it looks like B&N has it online for sure. I have the others in hardback, just not this one.)

The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness (I’ve got the ebook but I had to have the physical book too.)

Taltos by Anne Rice (Loved her Mayfair Witch series and of course trying to find them all in hardback. I’m telling you, it’s harder to find hardback. TONS of paperback but hardly any hardback. The first edition of The Witching Hour took me FOREVER to find.)

Lasher by Anne Rice (I repeat the above…)

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (B&N Leatherbound Collection…boy is my collection growing! BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED hardback covers).

What would you buy with $80 in a bookstore right now?

UPDATE FROM THE PUBLISHER at 11:23AM ET 12/16…

First off let me sincerely apologize for all the confusion regarding the free offer of Jane Austen special edition titles as well as the 10 Austen inspired novels. Please extend this apology to your readers and followers as well.

We have been trying to fix the problem all morning. It takes a lot of cooperation from different parties to make the offer happen and it unfortunately it took some extra time to iron out the kinks.

Let me tell you know that iBooks and Google books currently has everything correct.

Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Sony are currently working to get their prices adjusted. They should be correct shortly. Sourcebooks.com will also have our books and the illustrated versions available for free within the next hour!

Because of this confusion we want to celebrate Jane Austen’s birthday an extra day! This offer will be good tomorrow as well.

Many of you have noticed the new newsletter format that has been going out since last week and the new Sunday weekly recap (includes special announcements and book winners) newsletter that came out yesterday. At the moment, both formats are going out. Still, no more than 1 e-mail goes out daily from me.

My question to you is…How often would you prefer The Book Faery Reviews visit your inbox? I don’t want to get lost in there because you never know when there’s a book you might be interested in that I’m offering to a lucky reader and I definitely don’t want you to forget we’re around. But, I also don’t want you to decide to unsubscribe because you have too many emails coming in and you must decide on which to go (I do it too every once in awhile).

Just below, you’ll see a poll regarding your subscription preference. After I get a good amount of responders, I’ll likely change or keep the format of the e-Newsletters. Obviously, the majority will likely rule. Your response is very important to me. Just know that you will never receive more than a daily note from me. More than that and I’m definitely an inbox nuisance. So, please…please respond.

As you may have noticed, things look pretty different around here. Appears I’ve corrupted all of my themes somehow when I did the latest WordPress upgrade so I’m going to have to take the time to delete and re-install themes I had. Lucky me that I TRY to look at things in a positive light. How am I turning this into a positive? I now have a reason to make some more improvements around here. At least for now all posts are showing complete content.

Also, while I do have your attention, I’m currently in the process of making e-mail newsletter changes. Thinking of switching over to MailChimp for more flexibility and customization. I will likely be able to give my readers a new option of the daily post e-mails and/or weekly post round-ups. I’m rather excited about this pending change but things need to be in place before it begins.

Now…be sure to check out the latest posts while you’re here (#’s denote the # of copies we’re giving away)…

I’m sure it is obvious that I love to read. I read whenever I get the chance. Now that I’m working full time again outside the home, reading time is not as frequent as before but I try to read daily even if it’s just a couple pages of my current book read (right now I’m reading Bitter Frost by Kailin Gow and One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare). My favorite reading spots include my reading chaise in my bedroom, outdoors in the sun, and of course when I get a moment of quietness, in a nice warm bath.

I remember my first love of books came from Dr. Seuss which then led to Nancy Drew mysteries (the originals) and the Sweet Valley Twins (the originals) in middle school. In high school the classics (don’t tell my English teachers!) and V.C Andrews (before she died) fascinated me and later I became entranced by the world of Stephen King (Misery was my favorite) and Anne Rice (the Mayfair Witches) in my early college days. As an adult I became hooked in the historical romance and paranormal romance genres. I love a good story that transplants into a different place and time. I get so engaged sometimes I feel as if I’ve become the main heroine (of course I’d be the heroine!) and will often dream the scene again after reading.

I try to read a variety of books. Books that take me back to another time period or another world fascinate me, thrillers, adventure, and mystery get my heart pumping with excitement and have me solving a puzzling situation. Stories of struggle, discovery, and hope inspire me. And of course I’m a hopeless romantic so I love a good love story. We all know how it ends but the parts that get to that ending are filled with excitement and passion (at least the good ones are).

I’ve listed below some of my favorite genres that I found off Wikipedia (please note that NOTHING below are my own words)…

Speculative fiction is an umbrella fiction genre generally encompassing the more specific genres of science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and alternate history.

Creative nonfiction (also known as literary or narrative nonfiction) is a genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives.”Ultimately, the primary goal of the creative nonfiction writer is to communicate information, just like a reporter, but to shape it in a way that reads like fiction.”[1] Forms within this genre include personal essays, memoir, travel writing, food writing, biography, literary journalism, and other hybridized essays.

Historical romance is set before World War II.[1] Many historical romances include contemporary attitudes, as, for example, the heroines often have far more education than was the norm in their time period.[2]This subgenre includes a wide variety of other subgenres, including Regency romance.

Inspirational fiction – Any good book can be an inspiration, but many of these books highlight people overcoming adversity or reaching new levels of understanding. Whether they pull themselves up by their own bootstraps or have help from a higher power, these books will uplift and entertain you.[4]

Thrillers are characterized by fast pacing, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more powerful and better equipped villains.Thrillers may be defined by the primary mood that they elicit: fearful excitement.

Mystery fiction is a loosely-defined term that is often used as a synonym for detective fiction or crime fiction— in other words a novel or short story in which a detective (either professional or amateur) investigates and solves a crime.

Classical Literature refers to the great masterpieces of the Greek, Roman, and other ancient civilizations: Homer’s “Iliad,” Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” Virgil’s “Aeneid,” “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles, along with works by other ancient writers in epic, lyric, tragedy, comedy, pastoral, and other forms.

What’s your favorite genre? Do you like it all or do you have a higher preference for one?

FROM EMILY @ DARKLING TREASURES…My art is generally fantasy-based, yet somewhat eclectic as far as presentation goes; sometimes it will be just a painting on canvas, other times it could be a journal, a small zine, a series of sculptures…I like to work outside the box whenever possible. I love to read and write, so I have taken to designing and creating stationery, journals, and book arts when I am not painting or sketching out ideas.

I’m inspired by my strange inner world, emotions, nature, and all the possibilities a blank sheet of paper holds.
