In the Book of Revelation, a man named John has a prophetic dream. He dreams of the final prophecies that will come to pass – and the seven archangels that guard them. Each angel waits to sound their trumpet at God’s appointed time, preparing humanity to fight and win the final battle.

2,000 years later, Father Chris Mognahan is a member of the Hetairia Melchizedek, a secret society within the Catholic Church that studies Biblical omens. The society asks Chris to investigate an unusually grotesque crime – a murder on a college campus where the killer’s hand literally burned off the victim’s face. While the killing seems isolated at first, the society ties the murder to the final Biblical prophecy and a terrifying omen that the order of the prophecies is about to be disrupted. The final battle is coming too soon – long before humanity is prepared to win it.

Suddenly, Chris finds himself fighting against time and hell to keep the prophecies in order and stop an early Armageddon. He is joined by a band of unlikely allies, and together they find themselves in Rome above the Vatican Necropolis – the city of the dead – where the future is revealed to them in ancient texts.

They are not alone, however; an evil as old as time itself hunts them. As they travel across continents on their mission, the demonic force follows relentlessly, waiting in every shadowed corner, and every dark place.

As Armageddon descends, Father Chris finds that his only hope lies in a young woman within the group who has a secret gift – and their belief that God Himself may have sent her to keep the final angelic trumpet from sounding out the early end of the Earth.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…Carrie Salo is a dark storyteller and emerging author of supernatural thrillers. Classically trained at an Ivy League university, she studied the works of master storytellers seven stories underground in the muffled heart of one of the world ‘s largest libraries.

Carrie seeks to wield unrelenting suspense in her own exploration of all things (especially true things) that keep us awake at night. She has written under the guidance of two bestselling and national prize-winning authors. Her extensive travels have taken her to many haunted places, including the private catacombs of the Vatican. The Sounding is Carrie’s debut novel.

Carrie enjoys the smell of old books, New York riesling, late night jogging and thunderstorms, though not in that order. Storytelling is Carrie’s secret life. While she looks into all the dark corners by night, by day she is an advertising copywriter and account manager.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS…The Sounding was both exciting and scary; a heart beating kind of read that couldn’t be put down. So real feeling that it made me wonder if it could really happen.

On My Shelves is a weekly post at The Book Faery Reviews which shares THREE books from our personal collection. These books could be favorites, books to be read as soon as possible for our own enjoyment, as well as books to be read soon for scheduled reviews.

Books let us into their souls and lay open to us the secrets of our own. ~William Hazlitt

The Ghost Orchid by Carol Goodman - For more than one hundred years, creative souls have traveled to Upstate New York to work under the captivating spell of the Bosco estate. Cradled in silence, inspired by the rough beauty of overgrown gardens and crumbling statuary, these chosen few fashion masterworks–and have cemented Bosco’s reputation as a premier artists’ colony. This season, five talented artists-in-residence find themselves drawn to the history of Bosco, from the extensive network of fountains that were once its centerpiece but have long since run dry to the story of its enigmatic founder, Aurora Latham, and the series of tragic events that occurred more than a century ago.

Ellis Brooks, a first-time novelist, has come to Bosco to write a book based on Aurora and the infamous summer of 1893, when wealthy, powerful Milo Latham brought the notorious medium Corinth Blackwell to the estate to help his wife contact three of the couple’s children, lost the winter before in a diphtheria epidemic. But when a séance turned deadly, Corinth and her alleged accomplice, Tom Quinn, disappeared, taking with them the Lathams’ only surviving child.

The more time she spends at Bosco, the more Ellis becomes convinced that there is an even darker, more sinister end to the story. And she’s not alone: biographer Bethesda Graham uncovers stunning revelations about Milo and Corinth; landscape architect David Fox discovers a series of hidden tunnels underneath the gardens; poet Zalman Bronsky hears the long-dry fountain’s waters beckoning him; and novelist Nat Loomis feels something lingering just out of reach.

After a bizarre series of accidents befalls them, the group cannot deny the connections between the long ago and now, the living and the dead . . . as Ellis realizes that the tangled truth may ensnare them all in its cool embrace.

Love Finds You in Lonesome Prairie Montana by Goyer & Fleiss - Julia Cavanaugh has never left New York City. But in 1890, the young woman must head west to ensure that the orphans under her care are settled into good families. After her final stop in Montana, she plans to head straight back east. But upon arriving in the remote town of Lonesome Prairie, Julia learns to her horror that she is also supposed to be delivered—into the hands of an uncouth miner who carries a bill of purchase for his new “bride.” She turns to a respected circuit preacher to protect her from a forced marriage but with no return fare and few friends, Julia’s options are bleak. What is God’s plan for her in the middle of the vast Montana prairie?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith - “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”

So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to read.

During the 18 years that have passed since publication of the first of my 13 novels, the question that readers have posed to me most often is, by far, “Where do you get your ideas?” And the question is perfectly logical. Creativity is sometimes described as “making something out of nothing,” so the making of a novel invariably begins with the mere “nothing” of an idea.

We’ve all heard those classic words of advice to aspiring writers: Write what you know. And I have heeded that advice. Many interests that have developed over the course of my life have found their way into my books—theater, music, architecture, running, and more. These interests have equipped me with minor areas of ready-made “expertise” that can add color, depth, and credibility to the storytelling. As to the “germ” of each story, the inspiration, it seems to be waiting for me when the time comes to start a new project. When a new story is looming, I “raise my creative antenna” and put myself in a more receptive mode for ideas. The inspiration may come from a news story, from an overheard snatch of conversation, from a catchy phrase that seems promising as a title, or from something that I’ve been sitting on all my life. But it’s always out there. The trick for the writer, of course, is to learn to recognize it.

Further, because most of my writing has been in the mystery genre, the initial idea for a story may stem from an interest in a particular motive, means, or opportunity for killing a fictitious, though no less hapless, victim. One of my novels, Boy Toy, involved mushroom poisoning, a topic about which I had no prior knowledge. That’s where old-fashioned research comes into play (far easier now in the age of the Internet), equipping the writer with sufficient knowledge to create a fictive reality with credible authority. In my new mystery, The MacGuffin, I needed a crash course in thermodynamics before I could concoct a believable plot regarding alternative energy and pepper it with the right buzzwords.

The idea is only the beginning, of course. The inspiration phase just seems to happen; the perspiration phase that follows involves considerably more effort and discipline. But it’s the initial idea—that “ah-hah!” moment—that jump-starts the process and gives writers the impetus to roll up their sleeves and get down to the work of storytelling.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…Michael Craft is the author of a dozen prior novels and three stage plays. As a mystery writer he has been known for many years as the author of the popular “Mark Manning” series, set in the Midwest, as well as the “Claire Gray” series, set in California. Three of his novels have been honored as national finalists for Lambda Literary Awards. His latest mystery novel, The MacGuffin, features a new protagonist, architect Cooper Brant. In recent years, Michael Craft has broadened his creative focus to include playwriting and screenwriting. He lives in Rancho Mirage, California.

A cold-case murder fifteen years ago halted promising developments in the quest for clean energy when the rumored prototype of a groundbreaking water engine was stolen or destroyed. Now the race is on to repower America, and Cooper Brant, still grieving that long-ago murder of his father, suddenly finds his family visited by a second violent death, raising the stakes to unearth lost secrets. When Coop discovers how the two crimes are linked, a grim message becomes clear. He’s next.

Many years have passed since civilization’s brush with apocalypse. The world’s greatest threats have all been silenced. There is no anger, no hatred, no war. There is only perfect peace… and fear. But a terrible secret has been closely guarded for centuries: Every single soul walking the earth, though in appearance totally normal, is actually dead, long ago genetically stripped of true humanity.

Fleeing pursuit, with only moments to live, a young man named Rom stumbles into possession of a vial of blood and a piece of cryptic writing. When consumed, the blood will bring him back to life. When decoded, the message will lead him on a perilous journey that will require him to abandon everything he has ever known and awaken humanity to the transforming power of true life and love.

But the blood will also resurrect hatred, ambition, and greed.

Set in a terrifying, medieval future, where grim pageantry masks death, this tale of dark desires and staggering stakes peels back the layers of the heart for all who dare to take the ride.

When I started writing “A Soul to Steal,” I didn’t think very hard about how I was going to market it. It crossed my mind, sure, and I even went so far as to picture the cover in my mind—the Headless Horseman racing down a moonlit path.

But I didn’t really consider who the audience was, and at the time, I didn’t even know book bloggers existed, much less that they generally divided themselves into certain categories. I was just trying to finish a novel, which felt like a feat in and of itself.

As a result, I now have a novel I have trouble describing to people because it doesn’t break down into any conventional format. It is part mystery, part suspense-thriller, part paranormal romance, and a little bit of horror—with an underlying subplot about the nature of community journalism.

This has become quite a problem for me. When I published the novel, friends would ask, “What kind of novel is it?” At first I answered “horror,” because the book has the Headless Horseman on the cover and I thought that was the right answer. Some friends were happy with that, but others cringed. “Oh,” they said. “I don’t really like horror. I can’t stand gore.”

I would then rush to explain that the novel is just a tiny bit horror and contains no gore of any sort. I hate gore: I don’t find it interesting as a reader or a writer. Somehow, it feels cheap. Still, my overall point was this: my novel isn’t really horror.

Then I tried calling it a “paranormal romance,” because it has a heavy romantic and paranormal element to it. The novel is about two characters that must learn to trust each other to destroy the fears haunting both of them. But it didn’t feel quite right to call it a paranormal romance, given that a lot of books technically in that genre are fundamentally different than mine. There are no vampires, werewolves or angels, and my novel doesn’t feel like the next “Twilight.”

Adding to my difficulty is that the book has a huge mystery element to it. A notorious serial killer named Lord Halloween has returned to Leesburg,Virginia, and the police are desperately trying to find his identity. Local journalists Quinn and Kate are also investigating the trail and the answer isn’t revealed until the final few chapters.

But could I call the book a mystery? I tend to think of mysteries as Agatha Christie novels or the Nevada Barr books starring Anna Pigeon. Importantly, none of those books have elements of the supernatural in them—and mine definitely does.

When I queried book bloggers, the situation got even worse. Some wanted paranormal romances but hated mystery-thrillers. Others liked urban fantasy but not horror, something I didn’t even think was possible.

All this had me wondering: what the hell is my book? Is it a mystery-paranormal romance, a supernatural thriller, or a horror-lite with a side of suspense and a bit of bacon?

It wasn’t until the first reviews started rolling in that I finally figured it out. What kind of novel did I write? The one consistent thing I heard from my friends and others who read the novel was this: “I couldn’t put it down.” One told me she had no time to read my novel, but then proceeded to start it at 3 p.m. and read it straight through until the next day. Once she started, she was hooked.

I ran into similar reactions from many others. “A Soul to Steal” clocks in at around 450 pages—and took me years to write—but readers started blowing through the novel within a few days.

Once readers got over any preconceptions they had about whether it was a horror, suspense or paranormal romance, they found it didn’t matter. They just wanted to see how things turned out.

Now that’s the answer I give to the question, “What kind of book is it?”

“It’s a page-turner,” I say with a smile.

Something is stalking the citizens of Loudoun County, Va.

Is it the return of the notorious serial killer known as Lord Halloween? Or is it something worse—a figure that can cloak itself as your worst nightmare?

Kate and Quinn, two community journalists, rush to uncover the truth before a promised bloodbath on Halloween night.

Debbie doesn’t foresee a future beyond Handel Messiahs and low-budget tours … until her agent finagles her a minor role with a small-town company. The artists assembled for this production of Offenbach’s spooky opera, Tales of Hoffmann, have more than opera on their minds. Their games of love are not for the faint of heart, and the cutthroat atmosphere may have become literal. How far are they willing to go to advance their careers and even the score? The singer Debbie replaced died under suspicious circumstances, and after another minor player bows out suddenly, she is also given her role. Now she has two small roles that no one in their right mind would kill for. So, either someone isn’t in their right mind, or the close calls threatening Debbie’s safety are all unlucky coincidences. Add to the mix three preening tenors, a sexy lesbian director, a vengeful conductor, an obscenely rich and Hollywood-handsome general director, a fading Italian pop star, a trio of bitchy leading sopranos, an ambitious understudy, countless attention-starved underlings, an anti-opera terrorist group, a resident ghost, and Debbie’s kooky and dysfunctional friends and family, and you have an opening night that promises to genuinely thrill and chill.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS…I do believe this to be the first murder mystery book that had me laughing A LOT. What a cast of characters! Leave it to someone with stage experience to write a funny tale with a twist of what that lifestyle could be like with a diverse group of people. I don’t believe anyone else could do it. I remember the brief moments on stage and behind stage in my younger days and I could imagine easily this riot of a group. The main character, Debbie was fun to hang out with among the pages and her agent and mom tripped me out! I recommend this fun read to anyone looking for a quick and fun stage read.

Gravity has always been a friend of mine. It binds me to the earth, it’s kept me close to the ground. No matter how high I get, how hard I jump, gravity’s always there to pull me back and make sure I don’t fly out into space.

Life’s strength is its weakness: it’s always in a state of flux. Life is ever changing, ever moving, forever evolving. This makes life hard to predict. Sometimes, we do the best we can. We give one-hundred percent and we still fail.

That’s why, for me, writing is all about gravity. Books keep me centered, they’re that universal constant that gives me stability and helps me predict the future. I need the prediction. I rely on the stability. When I’m writing, I find a safe place where I control the outcome and I can make sure the good guy wins and the bad guy’s punished.

I’m never certain of that constant in real life. Too often, I see the bad guy hire an expensive lawyer, and see the innocent dying for a lack of protection. But in my writing and my work, I can take those things I see, twist and turn them, until the story (and ultimately) the world around me makes sense.

It’s also why I like writing comedy.

Comedy (according to John Vorhaus) is about truth and pain. He’s right. In comedy, we take something painful, wrap it in an attractive package, and then shine a light on it in such a way, we see life in a different perspective. And in seeing that new perspective, we’re better equipped to deal with the trials and hurts life throws our way.

In What Happens in Vegas, we meet Binda Morningstar. She’s the Every Woman: trying to find love, trying to live a life of integrity, and trying to keep her job. Of course, in the story (as in life) nothing really runs smoothly.

Her boss goes missing. Everyone (but Binda) figures he just took off. She knows something’s gone wrong, but if she’s going to find him, she’s going to have to take big risks.

That’s kind of like life, too. Getting what we want means stepping out of our comfort zones.

For Binda, it doesn’t go well. In fact, it goes hilariously wrong. From meeting the cop who’ll help her, to taking on the bad guy, every moment Binda is metaphorically standing with pie on her face.

That’s like life, too. We try. We fail. We try again.

But she persists, because it’s the right thing to do. Her gravity is the sense of right and wrong. It’s what keeps her grounded through the battle with the YIFFS at the sex convention, through her fight with the mobster, and through the twists and turns of her falling in love with the cop.

It’s what keeps her laughing and centered as the clock ticks down and her world starts to crumble. Because that’s life too: finding the funny moment in the midst of chaos…like the time I had to phone 9-1-1 and after the ambulance arrived for my life and death situation, the funny-crazy juxtaposition of the ambulance guy getting lost and I having to direct him to the hospital.

There’s always a moment when we can laugh and find that sliver of light in the dark situation. As we spin in the midst of the hard stuff of life and as those jagged, terrible pieces send us into orbit, laughter is what breaks our upward trajectory.

In our laughter and smile, gravity finds us. It reaches out with gentle hands and catches us before we fly too high, and it brings us back to earth. To solid footing and soft sand, to sunny days and rainy nights. It brings us back to center and allows us to walk once more, to put one foot in front of the other and predict our future and find our stability. ~ Natasha Deen

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…When Natasha was little, there was only one thing she wanted to be: a superhero. Unfortunately, being a klutz isn’t a super-power. She turned to writing because it allows her to be anything she wants, including a caped crusader. When not writing, she is an instructor and editor. Visit her at www.natashadeen.com, and hang out with her on Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads.

What Happens in Vegas
It’s not that Binda Morningstar’s an idiot—the girl’s got more degrees than a thermometer—but there’s something about a crisis that makes her lose her mind…and accidently injure anyone within a ten foot radius. But if she’s going to rescue her boss from a cursed jewel, she’s going to have to keep it together. Unfortunately for her, the cop on the case, Corin Hawthorne, has her losing her mind and her heart…and if he gets anymore drool worthy, she’s going to lose her inhibitions, too. To save her boss and win her man, she’s got to outrun a mobster, outwit the YIFFS at a sex fetish convention, and outthink an ex-wife—and she’s got to do it all without breaking an arm or inadvertently hitting anyone with pepper spray…it’s all got Binda hoping that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Many people think that people who write books lead solitary lives, that their lives are totally consumed by books, and that they don’t have any outside life. I’m sure there are some who fit that mold, just as there some people who fit the stereotype of the white-shirt banker, or the playboy athlete, or the … I’m sure you get the idea. But most writers are like you and me; they lead somewhat ordinary lives, with a family, some hobbies, activities, and places they like to go. Some have been writing for a long time, while others have just recently begun to enjoy its pleasures.

I am a member of that latter group, primarily because my education was mathematics and engineering, and I worked in technical organizations. Adding an MBA allowed me some flexibility in moving around both geographically and within a large multi-national company in Boise, Idaho, where we’ve lived since 1993. My roles also had me doing a lot of international travel, which re-ignited my love of travel that had lain dormant for quite a while. Good timing, along with some hard work, allowed me to take early retirement in 2007, and that’s when I started to spend more time writing and traveling (for my pleasure).

Now that I’m retired from the corporate world, I love to travel and I love to write. I have the US Registered Trademarked name as America’s International Travel Expert®, I’m a million-mile flier on United Airlines, and I’m writing fictional mystery novels set in exciting locations around the world. One of the great things about being an author, and enjoying international travel, is the ability to go to wonderful places to conduct research for an upcoming book. Traveling is also something that is a great passion of mine, and I do enjoy sharing my knowledge with others (there are free travel tips and resources on my website, plus you can also sign up for my free travel newsletter). I flew over 150,000 miles last year, and I’ve flown over 100,000 miles already this year – and flying out of Boise, Idaho, isn’t the easiest thing to do! It is a bonus to be able to enjoy travel and writing at the same time, and then to put them together in a book.

My first novel, Missing in Mexico, has its primary setting in San José del Cabo, Mexico, more commonly known as Los Cabos. I chose this location at the tip of Baja California because it’s a place where my wife and I escape to every February when we’re tired of the winter in Idaho! So I know the area well, plus the people down there are so warm and charming. One of the activities I particularly enjoy is the Thursday evening Art Walk in San José del Cabo; it is an absolute must when you are in San José or in San Lucas. My next book is set in Sydney, Australia, and I made several research trips there last year to ensure that the descriptions in the book are quiet authentic. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before we go to Australia, I’d better tell you a little about Missing in Mexico. Below are the synopsis and the first chapter. By the way, you can read the full first five chapters for free on my website at www.stuartgustafson.com. The book is available on Kindle, nook, and in print.

Synopsis…Sarah Johnson is a 19 year-old college freshman who didn’t board the plane for the return flight home from Los Cabos after a vacation with her family and her roommate. Her parents hire Stan, a private investigator, to locate her, and he starts by talking with her roommate Mary, the last person to see her in Cabo. Even with some promising leads and local help, Stan’s not able to find her, and so he returns to Seattle to tell the parents. Several months later he receives a mysterious letter from someone who says she can help him find Sarah, and he jumps on the next plane to Los Cabos. Will this be the lucky break he needs to find her, or will she remain missing – Missing in Mexico?

The voice over the intercom system announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, we trust you had a good time in Los Cabos, but it’s now time for us to take you back to the States. The cabin doors have been closed, and Alaska Airlines flight 1476 with nonstop service to Seattle-Tacoma is ready for departure.”

“Hey, wait. Sarah’s not here; we can’t leave without her,” the girl in seat 14A yelled in a frightened voice. Mary reached up and pushed the flight attendant call button even as the flight attendant was already headed toward her seat. “We can’t leave yet; Sarah’s still down there,” Mary continued, now reaching the point of hysteria.

“Please calm down, miss. Everyone’s already onboard. You can look for yourself,” the flight attendant said in a calm voice as she pointed to the window.

“What do you mean everyone’s onboard? Sarah’s not here; she should be sitting right here!” Mary pulled her tearing eyes away from the empty seat and looked out and saw that the boarding ramps had been pulled away from the airplane, but what she didn’t see scared her. How come Sarah’s not out there, running in a panic toward the plane? “Where’s Sarah? She was just there with me. Where is she? Don’t leave; Sarah’s missing!” Mary cried out as tears began flowing down her cheeks.

The annoyed passengers felt a jolt as the plane was being pushed back. They were ready for their flight home from Los Cabos. But Sarah wasn’t on board; she’s missing – Missing in Mexico.
