Hero, Cheryl Brooks – Review

PhotobucketHE IS THE SEXIEST, MOST IRKSOME MAN SHE'S EVER ENCOUNTERED...

Micayla is the last Zetithian female left in the universe. She doesn't know what's normal for her species, but she knows when she sees Trag that all she wants to do is bite him...

HE HAS SEARCHED ALL OVER THE GALAZY FOR A WOMAN LIKE HER...

Trag has sworn he'll never marry unless he can find a Zetithian female. But now that he's finally found Micayla, she may be more of a challenge than even he's able to take on... - FROM THE BOOK BACK

ABOUT THE AUTHOR...A native of Louisville, KY, Cheryl Brooks graduated from the Kentucky Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and then went on to earn a BSN from Indiana University. Horse crazy from the time she knew what a horse was, her family moved to rural Indiana in 1989. Since then, she's managed to accumulate four horses and five cats. She's been working full-time as a critical care nurse for more than thirty years which can be exciting, but she's itching for a different kind of excitement!

As a writer, she finds that any fantasy you have can come true if you just write it down! She's been keeping her friends entertained with her books for a number of years, and self-published a book in 2006, but Slave is the first of her books to be published with Sourcebooks Casablanca.

Her other interests include cooking, gardening, singing and guitar playing. I'm really hurt that The Eagles got back together without me! - ALTERED SLIGHTLY FROM CHERYL BROOKS' AUTHOR PAGE

Find Cheryl at her website, blog where she posts some yummy pictures (NOT for anyone under 18...NUDE photos!), and you can even find her on Facebook (Cheryl Brooks).

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...Hero is the last installment in Brooks' series The Cat Star Chronicles. All 6 could easily be read separate from  the previous books but all the more fun when all read. At #6 she definitely had me hating to see the end. Now I want to know what will happen with the Zetithian race! Who wouldn't purr with delight (and heat) from this one? I know I did! Best of all she ended with a strong and independent female! Of the books I've read in the series, this one and Fugitive had to be my favorites.

You can see my previous reviews and interview with Cheryl Brooks at:

NOTE...this is a VERY erotic fantasy book. Not for those who get squeamish when it comes to a very passionate "romp".

UPDATE...Cheryl just informed me there are 3 more to come in the series!! YIPPEE!!

Virgin is the next one which will be out Spring 2011. YES!

Sourcebooks provided me a copy of this book for review.

Mailbox Monday…08.02.10

Booksfree
Mailbox Monday is where other bloggers write about the books they received the previous week. The Printed Page is the host of the Mailbox Monday meme. Visit her blog to see what books made it her way and get a chance to get one of her books once she's done reading it. You can also see who all is participating this week and read about all kinds of new books.

**It's been some time since I last posted (7/12 to be exact) so I thought I'd do a bit of catch up as well as share some of the books I've picked up from others or purchased myself. You'd think with all the books I receive for free I'd keep myself from buying more books (or so my husband would hope) but on occasion I just can't help myself! This list is lengthier than usual so this round there won't be summaries but I did include links for more book information.**

The Wild Irish Sea, Loucinda McGary – Review

PhotobucketDrawn to a force he can't resist...
Former police officer Kevin Hennessey is running from his past-choosing to battle smugglers instead of dealing with his personal demons. When a desperate, rain-drenched American woman appears on his doorstep with wild tales of danger, Kevin is drawn to helping her, despite his reservations...

She never saw him coming...
Amber O'Neill knew without a doubt that her brother was in mortal danger. Rushing heedlessly to the rocky shores of Ireland, Amber was stunned to find her rescue mission derailed by a gorgeous, but deeply flawed Irishman...

The tumultuous sea, the intertwined fates of the coastal villagers, and unearthly tales of a hidden selkie prince bring Kevin and Amber together in a connection of mind, body, and soul that neither can deny...

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...Reading the book back had my interest peaked in hopes of a good magical love story. But to be honest I found my interest going up and down throughout the book. It took me longer than I had hoped to read because of this. I didn't find telepathy to be that magical and the story entwined with seals that walked around as humans was just that. I expected a seal to actually magically turn into a human and had hoped that some of the main characters were indeed theses "selkies". The danger plot of smugglers had me somewhat interested but then I felt the chase and danger wasn't as adventurous as I expected. This book might peak the interest longer in another reader but for me it's not one I'd read again. The Wild Irish Sea was an ok book in my mind if looking for a love/danger book to read.

This book was provided to me for review from Sourcebooks.

The Fire Lord’s Lover, Kathryne Kennedy – Review

PhotobucketIf his powers are discovered, his father will destroy him...

In a magical land ruled by ruthless Elven lords, the Fire Lord's son Dominic Raikes plays a deadly game to conceal his growing might from his malevolent father-until his arranged bride awakens in him passions he thought he had buried forever...

Unless his fiancée kills him first...

Lady Cassandra has been raised in outward purity and innocence, while secretly being trained as an assassin. Her mission is to bring down the Elven Lord and his champion son. But when she gets to court she discovers that nothing is what it seems, least of all the man she married...

Then Dominic and Cassandra together uncover an unspeakable evil, one that threatens the destruction of the magical realm they would give their souls to save... - FROM AMAZON

ABOUT THE AUTHOR...Kathryne Kenedy is a multipublished, award-winning author of magical romances. She's lived in Guam, Okinawa, and several states in the U.S., and currently lives in Arizona with her wonderful family—which includes two very tiny Chihuahuas. She welcomes readers to visit her website where she has ongoing contests at: KathryneKennedy.com.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...Kathryne Kennedy had me enchanted with her half human, half elf fire lord. Oh my! He could definitely keep me ablaze anytime (if only he were real)! Truly an enchanting love story with lots of fire (pun intended in all purposes!) and action. The mysterious hero who's heart finally blazes with passion and love for another who's just as heroic. The heroine is not your prissy gal but an independent and determined woman. LOVED it! If only it could be in hardback with silver gilded pages it would sit on my shelves forever for later re-reads.

Bitter Frost, Kailin Gow – Review

PhotobucketAll her life, Breena had always dreamed about fairies as though she lived among them...beautiful fairies living among mortals and living in Feyland. In her dreams, he was always there the breathtakingly handsome but dangerous Winter Prince, Kian, who is her intended. When Breena turns sixteen, she begins seeing fairies and other creatures mortals don t see. Her best friend Logan, suddenly acts very protective. Then she sees Kian, who seems intent on finding her and carrying her off to Feyland. That's fine and all, but for the fact that humans rarely survive a trip to Feyland, a kiss from a fairy generally means death to the human unless that human has fairy blood in them or is very strong, and although Kian seemed to be her intended, he seems to hate her and wants her dead. - FROM THE BOOK BACK

ABOUT THE AUTHOR...Kailin Gow is the multi-published Author of The Shy Girls Social Club Handbook for Dealing with Bullies and Other Meanies and 30 more books for teens and young adults, including The Gifted Girls Series which have been recommended by the Parents Teachers Association, PBS Kids, Homeschooling organizations, and Best Teens Books lists. Her fiction titles for older young adults and adults are: Diary of a Discount Donna (A Fashion Fables Novel), and the newly released The Phantom Diaries and Rise of the Fire Tamer (Wordwick Games Book 1). She holds a Masters Degree Communications Management from USC, and Bachelors Degrees in Drama and Social Ecology from UC Irvine. She is a mother, a mentor for young women, and the founder of the social group for girls age 13 to 19 called Shy Girls Social Club at shygirlssocialclub.com.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...Bitter Frost is the first in Gow's latest young adult Fey series. We're introduced to goblins, pixies, werewolves, and fairies. Breena is a shy girl who's constantly picked on by her schoolmates except by her best friend Logan who she later learns is a werewolf. We meet Kian, the Fairy Prince who's come to kidnap her and take her to the Winter Kingdom and the queen, his mom. She learns she is part fairy and princess of the Summer Kingdom; the reason why she always felt more at home in her fairy dreams than in the human world. Things don't turn out well and Breena ends up in the Summer Kingdom, where her father is king. She's arrested and taken to the Queen where she learns some of the reason why she was banned from Feyland. I enjoyed Bitter Frost. The descriptions of the the goblins, pixies, fairies, werewolves, and the different lands were amazing and gave me a clear picture. The book is filled with action and I nearly cried when the book ended before we could meet her father and find out what happened to her human mother. Thankfully we get to continue Breena, Kian, and Logan's story in the next book Forever Frost (September 2010).

MY LAST THOUGHT...I think it's time we get a new movie genre out...move over vamps! Love you guys but I'm ready for some Fey action!

I received a copy of this book for review. Receiving a copy in no way altered my opinion of the book.

Uncertain Magic, Laura Kinsale – Review

PhotobucketA man damned by suspicion and innuendo

Dreadful rumors swirl around the impoverished Irish lord known as "The Devil Earl." But Faelan Savigar hides a dark secret, for even he doesn't know what dreadful deeds he may be capable of...

A woman cursed by the gift of "sight"

As the two find their way to each other against all odds, Roddy becomes determined to save Faelan from his terrifying and mysterious ailment. But will their love end up saving him...or destroying her?

A breathtaking historical romance filled with poignancy, darkness, love, and an unexpected twist of Gaelic magic... - FROM THE BOOK BACK

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...Strong start that had me turning pages quickly. I just love contrasting characters who fall in love. I enjoyed the characters that Kinsale created. I found the story emotional and fun in the beginning and middle but out of sync towards the end. So out of sync that I found myself a bit disappointed of the ending. Still a fun read and one perhaps someone else might enjoy more than me. 2.5 stars because of the ending.

I did enjoy her latest book Lessons In French and you just might too. Read the REVIEW HERE. Find Laura here: Website and Twitter.

She’s on a mission to save the planet…

Find Judi Fennell on her website, on twitter, on Facebook, on Goodreads, and on Myspace.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS...As I read Catch of a Lifetime, I'm suddenly reminded of the movie Splash. You know, the one with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah? But of course the characters in this book oh sooooo much hotter (yeah...Tom Hanks just doesn't do it for me...lol). Although I COULD imagine Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson in this one. They're such hot "beachy" people! LOL

Book 3 of the Tritone trilogy, Catch of a Lifetime, was a cute read with an adorable little boy and hot papa that will have you reeled in from the beginning. Like the rest in the series, I'd give it 3 stars because I enjoyed them but doubt will keep them on my shelves. It's a fun read to pass along to others who enjoy a fun fantasy romance.

If you'd like to read more about Judi Fennell and her other 2 books in the Tritone trilogy, go here:

I was provided an advance reader copy of Catch of a Lifetime from Sourcebooks and Judi Fennell. This in no way influenced my opinions in this review.

Catch of a Lifetime, Judi Fennell – Author Guest Post & Giveaway

jf_photoAUTHOR GUEST POST...When I first started thinking about Catch of a Lifetime, I was in the final stages of the Gather.com/Pocket Books First Chapters Romance Contest with In Over Her Head, the first book in my Mer series. That story was one of the Top 5 Finalists in that contest and I wanted to show the final judges (two Pocket editors, Sue Grimshaw from Borders and Tom Gerace, the owner of Gather.com) that I wasn't a one-trick pony. That there were more stories to be had in the world I created. So, I sat down and wrote a partial (three chapters and a synopsis) for the next two books in the series, and, voila! Catch of a Lifetime was created.

So, a year later when I actually had to write it, after finishing In Over Her Head and Wild Blue Under, I thought I had it all under control. I knew the world, I knew the characters and I'd been thinking about this story for over a year. Should be a piece of kelp to write, right?

Wrong.

My characters didn't want to behave. They didn't want to do what I wanted them to. Angel let Michael find out that she was a Mer--something I hadn't planned on. Logan was harder to convince about letting her stay to watch his son than I'd thought he would be. Michael… well, Michael was just as adorable as I'd hoped, but he, too, didn't listen to me. I mean, I didn't want him to go to the beach to look for Angel, but did he listen to me? No he did not.

But the character who really didn't listen to me was Curtis.

If you've read the story, or when you do, you will ask me who Curtis is. See, Curtis didn't make it into the final version. Actually, Curtis didn't even make it into the first version. Well, not past chapter seven anyhow.

Curtis was the villain of Catch of a Lifetime. But he was supposed to be a nice villain. By that I mean there was a reason he was going to kidnap Michael. He wasn't going to hurt him. He just needed a way to force everyone to do what he wanted them to do for him.

When I started writing Curtis' part, I was fine with him. Then the story kept progressing and all of a sudden, there was Curtis. In a boat. Kidnapping the little boy.

I'm a parent--it's one of my worst nightmares. And, frankly, I couldn't see how I could keep to the humor aspect of my stories with a kidnapper running amok.

So that was it for Curtis. Well, it wasn't as cut and dried as that, but all of a sudden A.C. showed up out of nowhere, and, well… no spoilers here. Suffice it to say, A.C. took on Curtis' role in a way I could live with and still keep the humor in the story.

But what a surprise. I mean, I am a pantzer when I write, meaning I don't plot out my story. I usually know how they'll start, who the characters are and maybe a scene or two. Sometimes I only know the ending as, "and they all lived happily ever after." Sometimes, like in Wild Blue Under with Val's mother's letter which I wrote when I was working on the fourth chapter of that book, I know how it's going to end. But I've never had the bad guy not only not be the bad guy, but disappear altogether.

Oh, Curtis will show up--I have too many scenes and backstory and motivation for him not to, but I don't know where. Maybe he'll be the hero. I can certainly use his angst and reasoning to make him heroic. Dunno. That's the beauty and the curse of not plotting out my stories.

But the plus side is, I get to go along for the ride just like my readers do.

I hope you enjoy Angel and Logan's--and Michael's--ride! Here's a sample:

***

Logan could put this day on his list of great ones. Michael had obviously had a wonderful time, and Angel…

The woman was beautiful, knew a hell of a lot about the creatures the park rescued, and Michael obviously adored her.

And, his fortune-telling mother’s prediction notwithstanding, Logan was coming to adore her as well. He honestly couldn’t say when he’d enjoyed a day—and a woman—more.

He followed Angel and his son across the parking lot and clicked the remote opener so Michael could climb in the car, wondering if Angel would sit in the back like yesterday, or the front as she’d done on the ride over.

Then she tossed her hair over her shoulder again and he wanted to ask her to sit up front. Right next to him.

Every time she’d done that today, every time her eyes crinkled with laughter or she’d sung with the birds, he’d found himself remembering last night.

“Angel.” Her name slipped out before he thought better of it.

She reached the car and looked up at him with those expressive eyes. “Yes?”

“I—”

She did that thing again with her hair where it draped over her shoulder, dancing along her arm, a curl circling forward into the inside of her elbow. “What is it, Logan?”

It was powerful.

It was intense.

It was potent.

Different than last night, but no less compelling.

He slid his fingers up the path her hair had taken, feeling the velvet smoothness of her skin, hearing the slight catch of her breath that told him he wasn’t wrong to do this. Seeing the quick, shallow rise and fall of her breasts that he wasn’t feeling any guilt about looking at.

He stepped closer.

Her chin tilted, and she shook her hair again, sending more of the silky tresses sliding over his skin. “Is there something you needed?”

Oh, yeah. There was.

Cheryl Brooks – Author Guest Post & Giveaway

Photobucket

Hi, my name is Cheryl Brooks, author of The Cat Star Chronicles series of science fiction romance. Farrah asked me to discuss how I balance job, family, and writing career and possibly give some advice to aspiring writers. I’m not saying I’m any good at it, but since I’m currently promoting the release of my fifth novel, Fugitive, editing the sixth, and writing the seventh, have two sons, six cats, a puppy, four horses, a house and yard, a barn and pasture, and a husband to look after, plus, I’m a full-time nurse, working three twelve-hour night shifts a week in the ICU, I’ve at least had some experience. Without my two calendars—no, wait, there are three of them now—I couldn’t keep up with anything.

Having books published may sound like a dream come true, but it is also very stressful and time-consuming. When I was writing for fun, there were no deadlines, no rewrites, no edits, no promotions, no daily blog, and no Facebook. Now I’m trying to keep up with all of these things in addition to everything else in my life. My family sees less of me all the time. I might be home, but I’m sitting here at my desk in the back bedroom away from the rest of them. Watching television is such a thing of the past that I have to ask my son how to work the new TV every time I make the attempt—and we’ve had it since July.

I’m not alone in this, either. Ask any writer who has a day (or night) job and they will tell you the same thing. They simply don’t have a lot of free time. Recently, Hank Phillipi Ryan spoke to our RWA chapter, and as she was reciting all of the things she no longer had time to do, I muttered to the writer next to me, “Sounds like my life.” To which she replied, “Mine, too.

Fortunately, my family is very supportive of my writing, and as long as I keep the guys supplied with food and other essentials, they don’t complain. They help me clean the house, but we don’t do it nearly as often as we used to. My crockpot is my number one cooking appliance these days, and, fortunately, my husband likes homemade soup—which I can make out of just about anything. Sometimes I just have to decide that this day will be for catching up on paying bills or running errands. The writing always manages to sneak in there, though, because I still check emails and respond to blog comments—even when I’m on vacation.

As Dirty Harry once said, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” The same is true for writers. At one point, I was trying to write a 90,000 word book every three months, but I finally had admit that I simply couldn’t do it and remain sane. I was anxious to promote my writing, and if the bookstores said “We need more books by this author!” I saw it as a challenge and reassurance that my books were being well received by readers. However, you have to look out for yourself in this business, particularly if you don’t have an agent to do it for you. Learning how to say no when something just doesn’t feel right will save you a lot of grief. I haven’t done that nearly enough, so I’m speaking from experience here.

As a caregiver to others, I’ve never been very good at taking care of me, but that is one thing I would advise any writer to do. Having to suffer in order to write the great American novel is a fallacy. You are the writer; therefore you are the most important person in the publishing equation. Looking after your health (mental and physical) is just as important as making sure your agent or publisher is doing what’s best for your career. Even though I may not get enough exercise or eat exactly as I should (who does?) I do try to get enough sleep—which, as anyone who works night shift can tell you, isn’t always easy. Sometimes when I’m up late trying to write, I come to a point when I have to tell myself to shut down the computer and call it a night.

All hassles aside, the best part about writing is still the opportunity to let my imagination take flight. When I’m involved in the story, most of my concerns seem insignificant when compared with the harrowing adventures of my characters, and their romance is just as important to me as my own. Writing science fiction romance lets me go to places I’ve only seen in my mind’s eye and take other people along for the ride. That’s the magic. That’s the fun. And that’s what makes all the juggling and frustration worthwhile.

Now if I could just quit that night job…
