We are all different from each other and it is our diversity, which makes each person unique. “Keiko the Koala” is so much more than a book. It’s a powerful tool for parents to teach their children how to build strong relationships and self esteem. Young children will cherish Keiko in their formative years because he is comforting and entertaining. This exciting story is immediately rewarding to children, as they hear about the adventure of a koala bear, who finds himself lost in the forest. As he meets other animals, he quickly learns that he is different from other bears. You feel the anticipation as Keiko searches for a way out of the forest. While on his journey, he meets a young boy named Cody and they become friends. Cody is sad because he is different from other kids. Keiko teaches him that being different is what makes us special.

There are nasty rumours floating around the web these days about the demise of the book. Some people in the industry are afraid that the rise of the e-book means that the printed copy of a book will soon be extinct. Many tie the future of the book to the baby boomer generation: that is to say, the book will die out after that generation leaves. As a writer and educator, I like to believe that there is room for both e-books and the printed copy in our complicated modern world.

As a writer who loves to read and write printed books, I can’t help getting a little nervous when people say that the printed book is on the verge of extinction. Yet, there is a place for different kinds of books, just as there is room for many different kinds of art. In fact, saying that there is no place in the world for the printed book is a bit like saying there is no room for paintings, that all the visual arts will be replaced by the electronic versions of themselves. At the extreme end, it is like saying that our lives in this physical world will be replaced by lives in a digital one – and that is simply not going to happen.

As an educator, I can see that the printed book is still very much alive and well. While the new generation is reading more electronic versions of both fiction and non-fiction books in the classroom, the majority of students still read the printed versions of books. Younger children are still absorbed by picture books and that early experience with paper. Even though children are at the same time exposed to all kinds of computer learning games, the experience of reading a paper book remains an important and primary way of learning about the world. The library is still a favourite place for students of all ages and book fairs are still popular, especially as a fund-raising activity.

There is room for both printed books and e-books in the modern world, but that necessitates a lot of change within the book industry. There is no doubt that publishing is becoming a complicated business. It used to be enough to print and publish the paper copy of a book and distribute that book via physical bookstores and libraries. Now, the same book has to be published simultaneously in many different e-book formats such as; mobi, epub, azw, ereader and pdf, just to name a few. This plethora of ebook formats has aptly been referred to as the “Tower of eBabel.” Yet, this confusing variety of ebook platforms only highlights what is driving ebook pubishing in the first place: the fact that people like choice.

Now you can choose whether to read a paper book or an ebook of the same novel. Right now my husband is reading a paperback novel. However, he will at various times also read on his ipad or his kindle – this depending entirely on the situation. When he reads in bed at night, he reads on his ipad, which is back-lit. In his sunny backyard, he reads on his kindle. (The kindle has E-ink which, like the printed book requires bright light for optimal reading.) When having a bath or when going to the park, he takes along the paperback version, which is much more forgiving of moisture and sudden falls.

Happily, the end result of all this choice is that people can read more, and more often. Literacy is even more important (and more accessible) with the rise of the internet than it has ever been in the past, and the future is brighter for authors and readers alike. No one really knows what the future holds for the printed book, but there is no reason to assume that a new technology must completely supplant the old way of doing things. Like many thousands of others, I have elected to enjoy the choices that technology offers. I am happy to read an e-book or a paper version of a book as the mood strikes me. In my world, both paper and E-ink peacefully co-exist.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…T. M. Wallace lives in Ontario, Canada. She received her Masters degree in English Literature from Carleton University and has a degree in Education from the University of Ottawa. Writing for children is a passion that began early in her youth when she started writing stories for the local paper. Her first novel, “Under A Fairy Moon” was a quarter-finalist in the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards.

FROM THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS…First, you know that I HAD to get a copy of this book since I absolutely LOVE fairies, bad and nice, (as if it’s not obvious…haha). Second, I LOVE this cover. I’m honestly drawn to this cover whenever I see it. To me it evokes secrets, magic, and adventure in a hidden world. GORGEOUS! And that is exactly how the book was. It was a delight to read Under a Fairy Moon with the kids. Each night they looked forward to the next adventurous scene. When I asked my 10 year old son what he thought about the book he said…

UNDER A FAIRY MOON was so descriptive that I could envision myself as Connor fighting a skeleton to save Addy. (side-note: Hearing my kids use words like “envision” just absolutely blow my mind…you can tell they read a lot and/or pay attention to how others speak when describing something.) I very much enjoyed all the different magical creatures and people in the story. I recommend this book to other kids like me who like to pretend to be in other worlds filled with magical things and adventures.

Our book Rating: 4 out of 4 stars

I received a copy to review for the book tour with Pump Up Your Book in exchange for my honest opinion. No monies were given for this review. I am however a LinkShare/B&N affiliate.

Since I was a young child I have been entranced by the written word. I devoured every book set in my path and always saw myself someday creating my own books. It wasn’t until recently that I finally found the motivation and inspiration to achieve those dreams. I had left a successful career in graphic design to raise my daughter and together we explored the world through books and outdoor adventures at our local zoo. Facing my mortality after a cancer diagnosis I wanted to focus my energy on creating something lasting for her to remember our time together.

Like me, my daughter is a voracious reader. At only 15 months she was demanding her favorite books be read repeatedly, sometimes our reading sessions would last hours, and I was always looking for new material that engaged her. She would be most entertained by books that set forth questions and required participation with flap flipping or object hunting. Mostly she gravitated to animals. Any animals really, but she particularly loved those she could find at the zoo.

We would play games as we went from exhibit to exhibit. I would ask, “I see something yellow, can you find something fuzzy, yellow and tall?” Her exuberant cries of “I see it! I see him! What he doin Mama?” would follow and I would bask in the wonder of a child’s ability to comprehend her world.

A child’s wonder and a mothers love, that is the heart of I see… Savannah. It is a book that captures the adventure and curiosity of my young daughter, and incorporates my motherly desire to follow along on her discovery. Thankfully, my prognosis is good, and I will hopefully be here to share her world for many years to come. But just in case, I know I spent my energy distilling this time into a book that will not only be a lasting gift to her, but perhaps also a gift to be shared by many other parents with many other adventurous children.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…Kirstan was all about her traditional career until she looked into the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen. Since that amazing moment she has focused on wielding her ten-plus years of graphic design experience, a B.A. in Arts & Letters, and every other creative bone in her body to start her own freelance venture, allowing her to be lost in those eyes every single day.

A lifelong Portland native and greyhound enthusiast, she enjoys spending time in Stumptown with her husband, baby girl, two adorable whippets and their super fluffy kitty.

I’m Not Fat Because I Wanna Be is a story written by 6 year old LaNiyah Bailey who struggled with being made fun of by other kids because of her weight. As a parent who’s dealt with this with one of my own children over the years, I’m amazed at this young girls bravery. The fact that she openly shared what she went through so others in her situation could feel a little better about themselves just makes me feel as proud as if I was her parent. In a world so caught up on looks, we’re not realizing the pain and bad examples we set for our children. They see us point out others who are different, therefore, they do too. Then when our loved ones face the problem Miss Bailey did, it puts things into a different perspective for us (and sadly it took a child’s pain to see it). I hope more of us rethink our old thoughts and behaviors. I know it has been a real eye opener for me and my husband over the last 4-5 years. Instead as parents and adults we should be telling the children that we are ALL beautiful and unique. That we don’t have to look like the super model or mannequin at the store. We were made individually therefore we will all look different.

I HIGHLY recommend sharing this book with other adults who work with other children dealing with weight issues and even those who don’t. It’s the perfect launch into a more in-depth conversation about bullying and self-image. Visit the author’s site for additional resources that will surely help you in your discussion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…LaNiyah Bailey is a 6 year-old kindergartner from Chicago. In such a short period of time this 6 year old, has been through a lot.

Born October 9, 2004 she came into the world “smiling” at 6 lbs 9oz. At that time LaNiyah’s parents knew she was “special.” LaNiyah has a cool and true story to tell about how she now deals with kids taunting and teasing her because she’s “different.”

LaNiyah had to learn that everyone is not your friend and that the old saying: sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt me, was not true. She learned that words can hurt a lot more than sticks and stones.

But with the love and support of her family, she has over come many obstacles, which is why she wanted to share her story and let the world know, that there are other reasons some people are not “normal” and we should look at a persons heart and intentions, versus what they look like on the outside.

Having yearly, monthly, and/or weekly marketing goals are crucial to achieving success. With goals, you know where you’re heading and can work toward that end.

Marketing goals can be considered a marketing plan, and it will have a number of steps or objectives that must be set in motion and accomplished.

Whether you’re trying to sell a product or services, five of the bare basic marketing strategies are:

1. Create a presence and platform
Creating an online presence and platform can be initiated by creating a website or blog. First though, you’ll need to be sure of your niche because the site name and content should reflect your area of expertise is.Remember, plan first. Choose a site name that will grow with you. Using an author as an example, if you choose a site name, Picture Books with [Your Name], you’ve limited yourself. What if your next book is for young adults?

Some authors create sites with the name of their book. This is a good strategy for pure focus on that one book, but again, what happens when more books become available. Will you create a site for each of your books.

While you can do this, you will be stretching yourself thin and diluting your main focus: you as the author of multiple books.

Leave room to grow; it’s always advisable to use your name as the site’s name.

In addition, with today’s gone-in-a-second attention span, it’s a good idea to keep your site simple. Sites that take a few seconds or more to load may cause you to lose potential buyers.

2. Increase visibility
Writing content for your readers/visitors is the way to increase visibility. The word is: Content is King. Provide interesting, informative, and/or entertaining content that will prompt the reader to come back. Also, be sure your content is pertinent to your site, and keep your site and content focused on your platform.

To draw traffic to your site, promote your posts by using social media. You can also do article marketing which will increase your visibility reach.

3. Draw traffic to your site
Another strategy is to offer your readers free gifts, such as an e-book relevant to your niche. This will help to increase your usefulness to the reader. This is considered organic marketing; it funnels traffic back to your site with valuable content and free offers.

4. Have effective call-to-actions
Your site must have call-to-action keywords that will motivate readers to visit and click on your links.

Keywords to use include:

Get your Free gift now for subscribing

Subscribe to our Newsletter

Free e-book to offer on your own site

Buy Now

Don’t hesitate, take advantage of our expert services

Be sure to bookmark this site

5. Develop a relationship with your reader
You get the idea, motivate the reader to want what you’re offering and give him/her a CLEAR and VISIBLE call-to-action. Make it as simple as possible for the visitor to buy what you’re offering.

It’s been noted that only 1% of first time visitors will buy a product. Usually, only after developing a relationship through your newsletter, information, and offers will your potential customer or client click on the BUY NOW button.

While it will take some time and effort to implement and maintain these strategies, it will be worth it in the long run. Think of it as a long-term investment.

Happy marketing!

This is a novel that charms, shocks, and moves us by its portrayal of passionate and fascinating lives, by its re-creation of a strange and exotic moment in history–and by the ways in which it considers, and adds resonance to, our deepest images of the masculine and the feminine. He is angry and alone, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness, and as he takes refuge in his imagination, he finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. While his family falls apart around him, David is violently propelled into a land that is a strange reflection of his own world, populated by heroes and monsters, and ruled over by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a mysterious book… The Book of Lost Things.

An imaginative tribute to the journey we must all make through the loss of innocence into adulthood, John Connolly’s latest novel is a book for every adult who can recall the moment when childhood began to fade, and for every adult about to face that moment. The Book of Lost Things is a story of hope for all who have lost, and for all who have yet to lose. It is an exhilarating tale that reminds us of the enduring power of stories in our lives.

There he is taken by the changelings—an unaging tribe of wild children who live in darkness and in secret. They spirit him away, name him Aniday, and make him one of their own. Stuck forever as a child, Aniday grows in spirit, struggling to remember the life and family he left behind. He also seeks to understand and fit in this shadow land, as modern life encroaches upon both myth and nature. In his place, the changelings leave a double, a boy who steals Henry’s life in the world. This new Henry Day must adjust to a modern culture while hiding his true identity from the Day family. But he can’t hide his extraordinary talent for the piano (a skill the true Henry never displayed), and his dazzling performances prompt his father to suspect that the son he has raised is an imposter. As he ages the new Henry Day becomes haunted by vague but persistent memories of life in another time and place, of a German piano teacher and his prodigy. Of a time when he, too, had been a stolen child. Both Henry and Aniday obsessively search for who they once were before they changed places in the world. The Stolen Child is a classic tale of leaving childhood and the search for identity. With just the right mix of fantasy and realism, Keith Donohue has created a bedtime story for adults and a literary fable of remarkable depth and strange delights.

The Countess by Rebecca Johns (historical fiction) – In 1611, Countess Erzsébet Báthory, a powerful Hungarian noblewoman, stood helpless as masons walled her inside her castle tower, dooming her to spend her final years in solitary confinement. Her crime—the gruesome murders of dozens of female servants, mostly young girls tortured to death for displeasing their ruthless mistress. Her opponents painted her as a bloodthirsty škrata—a witch—a portrayal that would expand to grotesque proportions through the centuries.

In this riveting dramatization of Erzsébet Báthory’s life, the countess tells her story in her own words, writing to her only son—a final reckoning from his mother in an attempt to reveal the truth behind her downfall. Countess Báthory describes her upbringing in one of the most powerful noble houses in Hungary, recounting in loving detail her devotion to her parents and siblings as well as the heartbreak of losing her father at a young age. She soon discovers the price of being a woman in sixteenth-century Hungary as her mother arranges her marriage to Ferenc Nádasdy, a union made with the cold calculation of a financial transaction. Young Erzsébet knows she has no choice but to accept this marriage even as she laments its loveless nature and ultimately turns to the illicit affections of another man.

Seemingly resigned to a marriage of convenience and a life of surreptitious pleasure, the countess surprises even herself as she ignites a marital spark with Ferenc through the most unromantic of acts: the violent punishment of an insolent female servant. The event shows Ferenc that his wife is no trophy but a strong, determined woman more than capable of managing their vast estates during Ferenc’s extensive military campaigns against the Turks. Her naked assertion of power accomplishes what her famed beauty could not: capturing the love of her husband.

The countess embraces this new role of loving wife and mother, doing everything she can to expand her husband’s power and secure her family’s future. But a darker side surfaces as Countess Báthory’s demand for virtue, obedience, and, above all, respect from her servants takes a sinister turn. What emerges is not only a disturbing, unflinching portrait of the deeds that gave Báthory the moniker “Blood Countess,” but an intimate look at the woman who became a monster. – FROM B&N

They say, you can tell a lot about someone by what they read. Perhaps that is so. I thought I’d share with you what’s on my shelves. You tell me if you can figure out who I am by my books. For I think if you pay close attention or look closely, you’ll be able to decipher the clues to who I am.

Each week I’m going to go through the shelves in my bedroom and tell you the name of three books. (Because we ALL know, I’m a freak about numbers and especially the number THREE. (In fact I want a book about 3s!) The books living on these shelves are either my favorites (in my preferred hardback version), books I wish to read sooner than later, and the books I’m scheduled to review. One day I may go over the giant bookcase in the other room, but for now we’ll start with the characters who watch me while I sleep (what else would I be doing?!).

Without further ado…the first 3 books on my shelves:
(top to bottom, left to right, and yes they are in alphabetical order by AUTHOR)

Number ONE - The Outlander by Gil Adamson – Want to read.

Set in 1903, Adamson’s compelling debut tells the wintry tale of 19-year-old Mary Boulton ([w]idowed by her own hand) and her frantic odyssey across Idaho and Montana. The details of Boulton’s sad past—an unhappy marriage, a dead child, crippling depression—slowly emerge as she reluctantly ventures into the mountains, struggling to put distance between herself and her two vicious brothers-in-law, who track her like prey in retaliation for her killing of their kin. Boulton’s journey and ultimate liberation—made all the more captivating by the delirium that runs in the recesses of her mind—speaks to the resilience of the female spirit in the early part of the last century. Lean prose, full-bodied characterization, memorable settings and scenes of hardship all lift this book above the pack.

Number TWO – Aesop’s Fables Illustrations by Ernest Griset – LOVE this version. Beautiful hardback with foil letter printing on the jacket cover.

Number THREE - The River Wife by Jonis Agee – Want to read.

When the earthquake brings Annie Lark’s Missouri house down on top of her, she finds herself pinned under the massive roof beam, facing certain death. Rescued by French fur trapper Jacques Ducharme, Annie learns to love the strong, brooding man and resolves to live out her days as his “River Wife.”

More than a century later, in 1930, Hedie Rails comes to Jacques’ Landing to marry Clement Ducharme, a direct descendant of the fur trapper and river pirate, and the young couple begin their life together in the very house Jacques built for Annie so long ago. When, night after late night, mysterious phone calls take Clement from their home, a pregnant Hedie finds comfort in Annie’s leather-bound journals. But as she reads of the sinister dealings and horrendous misunderstandings that spelled out tragedy for the rescued bride, Hedie fears that her own life is paralleling Annie’s, and that history is repeating itself with Jacques’ kin.

Among the family’s papers, Hedie encounters three other strong-willed women who helped shape Jacques Ducharme’s life–Omah, the freed slave who took her…

If I can educate them, inspire them, make them laugh or put a smile on their face with my words or characters, then I did my job as a writer and that makes feel good about what I am writing about.

The Joe-Joe Nut and Biscuit Bill Adventure Series is about animal detectives, which is for readers in 2nd and 3rd grade and up. In this series children will learn about animal tracks, as well as rocks and minerals. My new release is book 2 in the Joe-Joe Nut Series called Mineral Mischief. I add in quite a bit of interesting and factual information that will educate and entertain the reader. It also can be used to supplement the topic of rocks and minerals in a classroom. Each book has tons of information about the topic and about the suspects. All books are written in a fun and educational way. In Mineral Mischief, each suspect collects a specific rock or mineral. As the detectives question each suspect the reader will learn about each suspect’s collection. The suspect will also reveal some unique information about a specific rock or mineral in their collection. At the end of the book I’ve included the rock cycle, terminology, a ‘Did You Know’ section, as well as various experiments that the reader can try out. This book can also be used to satisfy some of the National Standards Requirements for Science.

Here is a small blurb of the story:
Joe-Joe and Biscuit found themselves in a dark and dreary cave, and in front ofthem, sitting on an ornately carved stone pedestal, was Maple’s mineral. To reach out and take it would be so easy. It glistened like stars in a midnight sky, attractingtheir attention, luring them. There had to be a catch somewhere. Something wasn’tright. Joe-Joe and Biscuit stood beside the pedestal, analyzing it. There was acircle in the center of the pedestal, and the mineral was placed in the center of thatcircle. A TRAP! Thought Joe-Joe as he glanced at his partner, who was wearing arusset-colored fedora, which matched his own—they definitely looked sharp. Joe-Joe glanced behind Biscuit, where he noticed a deep gap in the wall. The opening was barred like a cage. Barely any light shined through to reveal what was inside. Joe-Joe had an inkling that, if he removed the mineral, the cage door would open, unleashing a horrific Greek beast that would assuredly eat them both for dinner. Joe-Joe began thinking like an adventurer. He was suddenly consumed with the identity of Indiana Jones.

I’ve been asked in the past to write about where the idea for the History Camps in my new novel, The Lens and the Looker, came from. It’s been extremely gratifying to have people tell me that they really like the concept. Here’s what’s called the story’s elevator pitch. That’s a really short description of the whole book, like if you met a big book publisher on an elevator and you only had the length of the ride to get his interest.

“It’s the 24th century and humans, with the help of artificial intelligences, or A.I.s, have finally invented the perfect society. To make equally perfect citizens for this world, the elders have created History Camps, full-sized recreations of cities from Earth’s distant pasts. Here teens live the way their ancestors did, doing the same dirty jobs and experiencing the same degradations. History Camps teach youths not to repeat the mistakes that almost caused the planet to die. But not everything goes to plan.

The Lens and the Looker is about three spoiled teens from the 24th century who are kidnapped and taken back in time to 1347 Verona, Italy and abandoned. Now they only have two choices; adapt to the harsh medieval ways or die.”

As to where the ideas for these flights of imagination came from, I’ve had to give it a lot of thought. It’s like my mother always said about me, “He’s got a good memory, but sometimes he forgets.” Then again, I guess I can be forgiven, for several reasons.

One is that – I’m really old! It’s taken me to the age of 60 to have this first book published, but I wrote down the first ideas for History Camps away back in 1989. I mean, I have a hard time remembering what happened yesterday. But, seriously, an idea is usually the culmination of many experiences in a person’s life, some going back to childhood. Having to think about where this History Camp idea came from is actually a fascinating exercise in navel gazing. So, let’s take a look at all the pieces of lint stuck in my “innie” and see what we’ve got.

Let’s start by me remembering where my love of dystopian literature came from. In high school, back in the 1960s, there were certain books we all had to read. I’m sure they’re still on most school’s curriculum. There was George Orwell’s 1984, John Wyndam’s The Crysalids, Aldous Huxley’s, and my favorite, the one that made me want to be a writer, William Golding, The Lord of the Flies.

That was over forty years ago. Whew!

Then I went through my Star Trek stage, where it was implied that, by the 24th century, the world would be a place of peace. There would also be no hunger, disease and every individual could improve themselves to their greatest potential, if they chose to.

I believe another important influence that fed the History Camp idea was my deep involvement, as an adult, with the Green political party all across North America. On the intellectual side, I studied deep ecology, world population, political movements and many other themes. On the practical side, with my business background, I started a company that catered to Green Party candidates and provided them with election supplies easily. In Canada, my work put Green Party election signs in every political riding across the country. This helped the Greens go from getting just over 50,000 votes, country wide in 1997, to over 1,000,000 votes in 2008. In the USA, I have the infamous distinction of having sold 3,200 Ralph Nader election signs into Florida in 2000, which probably gave Mr. Nader and extra 25,000 votes. This was enough to give the political right the opportunity, some say, to steal the election. That was a lesson to me (and it shows in my writing) that one person really can make a difference, but sometimes it turns around and kicks who’s ever around in the butt!

And then there’s one last thing, a last piece of the puzzle, a phrase that floated around in my mush melon for years. It’s a quote by Edmund Burke that goes; “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”

So, just before I starting the first History Camp scribbles, I vaguely remember thinking, “What if there was a benevolent world body whose job it was to teach the next generation what our ancestors went through for thousands of years? How could they impart that knowledge? In what form would these lessons take place? I waited for my brain to answer. Nothing! Nada. There was silence from within. But I’ve always found the best way to come up with a solution to a problem is to tell my brain what I wanted it to accomplish and then get on with other things. The solution would be worked on by all the gremlins rummaging around in my subconscious.

It was a warm summer’s day in my hometown of Kingston, Ontario. I was taking some out-of-town visitors to the premier local tourist attractions, Old Fort Henry. It’s a huge, limestone fort built on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence and Cataraqui Rivers, built some forty years after the war of 1812, to discourage the Americans from invading British North America again. I was walking around, watching all the summer students in their 19th century costumes. They were talking to the visitors about how things were away back when.

And then it struck me. That creative bump, no a bang. It was that brain rush that all writer’s wait for, like a drug addict getting their hit. My subconscious had put it all together and it came to me with clarity. Instead of a “touristy historical theme park”, where people played at being someone from the past, how about if, in the future, society would built whole cities, identical to those from different eras, and young people would go there, not for a fun outing, but to live there to gain a true appreciation of the benefits of modernity? I liked it. But then I thought, books have to be an exciting story, with conflict. In a perfected world, can there be conflict? I smiled as that answer came to me immediately. My subconscious had done a good job. What was the inspiration that came to me, you ask? Sorry. You’ll have to read the book to find out.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…“I write Post-Dystopian fiction. After society’s collapse, which is imagined in so many great dystopian stories, humans will either fade into history, with the dinosaurs, or, if it learns the right lessons, society will go on to construct a civilization to last tens of thousands of years. The LENS and the LOOKER, and all my History Camp stories, are the exciting adventures of young people doing the latter.” – -Lory Kaufman

On the artistic side of Lory’s career, he’s written, acted and directed children’s theatre and musical theatre. He enjoys art, especially sculpture. He loves science fiction and historical fiction and he has been deeply involved in the green movement all across North America. All this shows through when you read his work. Lory has three grown children and works and lives in Kingston, Canada.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Book #1 of the Verona Trilogy

Adventure, Time Travel, a Love Story!

Young Adult, Post-Dystopian Fiction

It’s the 24th century and humans, with the help of artificial intelligences (A.I.s), have finally created the perfect post-dystopian society. To make equally perfect citizens for this world, the elders have created History Camps, full sized recreations of cities from Earth’s distant pasts. Here teens live the way their ancestors did, doing the same dirty jobs and experiencing the same degradations. History Camps teach youths not to repeat the mistakes that almost caused the planet to die. But not everything goes to plan.

In this first of a trilogy, we meet three spoiled teens in the year 2347. Hansum almost 17, is good looking and athletic. Shamira, 15, is sassy, independent and an artistic genius. Lincoln, 14, is the smart-aleck. But you don’t have to scratch too far beneath the surface to find his insecurities.

These three “hard cases” refuse the valuable lessons History Camps teach. But when they are kidnapped and taken back in time to 1347 Verona, Italy, they only have two choices; adapt to the harsh medieval ways or die. The dangers are many, their enemies are powerful, and safety is a long way away. It’s hardly the ideal environment to fall in love – but that’s exactly what happens. In an attempt to survive, the trio risks introducing technology from the future. It could save them – or it could change history.

I am often asked why I don’t write books for adults. Sometimes the question comes to me as: “That’s nice, when are you going to write a real book?”, as if books for young adults aren’t real. Ditto the attitude for fantasy. Thank goodness the idea isn’t a pervasive one, or else I might have to get mean. I write YA fantasy stories, because, well, I love them. I’ve always loved fantasy, starting from when I was very young—I was a fairy tale junkie. I bought a book of Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales at a yard sale when I was 9 or 10, and read every single story over and again. I knew them all by heart. I was never a big reader of realistic fiction; I liked the Sweet Valley Twins well enough, but didn’t devour their stories. Instead my favorites were by Roald Dahl—I took out The Witches about a hundred times from the school library—and Madeline L’Engle (A Wrinkle in Time was probably my favorite book ever). I don’t know why I loved those stories so much, except that they were so far removed from my own life, so full of possibility.

When I grew up and decided to write, I came back to YA books. Harry Potter renewed my love of those stories, and it was a natural fit. I could have written fantasy for adults, I suppose, but to me they always seem like they’re trying too hard. They take a great tale and try to squeeze in all this heavy adult ‘stuff’ that just drags everything down. And they take themselves much to seriously, I think. I love that YA can be itself and not have to apologize for it.

And if that means I don’t write ‘real books’, then I think I’ll just continue to write ‘unreal’ ones.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR…Christine Norris is the author of several works for children and adults, including the Library of Athena series and the Zandria duology. When she’s not out saving the world one story at a time, she is disguised as a mild mannered substitute teacher, mother, and wife. She cares for her family of one husband-creature, a son-animal, and two felines who function as Guardian of the Bathtub and Official Lap Warmer, respectively. She has also done several English adaptations of novels translated from other languages. She reached a new level of insanity by attending Southen Connecticut State University Graduate School’s Information and Library Science program, so that someday she, too, can be a real Librarian. She currently resides somewhere in southern New Jersey.

Her current book is a YA/Fantasy titled The Mirror of Yu-Huang.

Megan’s dreams of a fun and relaxing Christmas holiday turn into a nightmare when the headmistress of her school strong-arms her father into hosting a huge New Year’s ball for the Chinese ambassador. She’s been unlucky with houseguests in the past—like the one who died. Then Megan receives a gift, one that shows someone knows not only about the Library of Athena but of her connection to it. Who made the mysterious phone call in the study? Who stabbed Xu Ping? Megan thinks she knows, but before she can confirm her suspicions the Library is invaded, and only the Librarian stop the invader from threatening the world. Book 3 of the Library of Athena series.

AN EXCERPT…

A Snake in the Garden

The voice was low, and muffled by the door, so it impossible to make out who was speaking. It certainly wasn’t Megan’s father, though, because whoever it was had an accent.

The speaker paused and made several noncommittal noises, as if he or she were listening to someone else. A tap on the shoulder made Megan jump and turn around. It was Rachel. She pantomimed someone speaking into a phone. Megan nodded–a phone call seemed the most likely explanation for the one-sided conversation.

“I know, I know,” the voice said. “We’ll be leaving in a day or two, and my chance will be gone.” There was another pause. “Our suspicions have been confirmed. I know for sure she’s the Librarian. She wears the symbol.”

Megan gasped. She put her hand to her throat, but of course, the tree necklace was upstairs in her jewelry box. It didn’t go with her dress, it was so plain, and she’d thought it would look strange if she wore it to the ball.

The conversation in the study continued.

“She wasn’t wearing it when we arrived, but she is now … I don’t know how it came to her, or when … Yes, perhaps.”

So, whoever was in the study had seen her wearing the necklace, which meant it wasn’t anyone who had arrived tonight for the ball. That wasn’t any help at all, since she had already narrowed down the gift-giver to someone in the ambassador’s party.

Something else occurred to her. If the person who gave her the necklace knew who she was, then the person in the study wasn’t the one who had given it to her, but was looking for her. Her head spun as that idea sank in–there were twopeople among their guests with very serious secrets.

All four girls put their ears to the door, brows furrowed. The person in the study must have moved, because the voice was softer, farther away.

“I don’t know. Hemmlich’s notes were not complete, and he was an idiot. He said the library must be hidden behind the common library in the house, and we both know it is not there.”

Megan’s stomach took up residence near her feet. What notes? She thought back. Josef Hemmlich had brought stacks of notes with him when he came to The Parthenon, but all of them had left with Diedrich. Megan had saved copies of them–they were stored with Sir Gregory’s diary in the hole beneath her hearthstone.

Josef had come to the manor looking for a map that would lead him to the Ankh of Isis. Megan had seen him searching through the regular library, just a few feet away from where she now stood, for something he thought would lead him to the artifact. He hadn’t known about the Library of Athena, and definitely not about the magic books.

He didn’t have time to send any kind of message after he did find it, that’s for sure. Of course, he probably had more notes somewhere, like in his office at the museum, or his house.

Megan suddenly remembered Hemmlich’s last words with startling clarity. I am not the last … Librarian.

Her breath caught in her throat. At the time, she had blown the statement off as the last attempt of a condemned man to frighten her. Now it seemed more like a prophecy. Someone else–more than one someone–knew about the Library of Athena. And Megan’s role in protecting it.

The voice in the study continued.

“I was saving that as a last resort. He doesn’t know who I really am, but he knows something … I can makehim tell me if he doesn’t cooperate.”

“Who the heck do you think he’s talking about?” Rachel whispered in Megan’s ear.

Megan shook her head. “Oh, wait.” No. “Do you think … Bailey?”

Bailey had been with Sir Gregory since the butler was a very young man. He had been present when the archaeologist brought back his first magical artifact, the Crown of Zeus, and when he created the Library of Athena. Megan was suddenly afraid for Bailey’s safety.

“Yes … Yes, I understand.” The speaker moved again, back toward the desk, by Megan’s reckoning. “Tonight … No one will suspect me. There are hundreds of people here. By the time they sort it all out, my mission will be complete … I will contact you again when I am finished … Until then.”

The clunkof the handset being replaced was like a bomb exploding in Megan’s gut. Footsteps moved toward the door.

“Quick, back into the bathroom.”

Megan grabbed Rachel’s dress and dragged her across the hall. The girls just managed to cram themselves inside and shut the door before they heard the study door open and close again.

Megan held her breath. She wanted to know who it was. Didn’t she? It was her job to protect the Library, and she needed to face this threat head-on. But what could she do? She was still only a kid. What would she do once she knew who was plotting against her?

Fear and anger fought for control. When she agreed to be the Librarian, she hadn’t signed on for this. Josef Hemmlich had been a fluke. At least, she’d thought he was. Now that the moment for action had arrived, she was frozen with indecision.

Rachel, apparently not laboring under such a conflict, ripped the door open and ran into the hall.

“Bugger! He’s gone.”

Harriet stepped out behind her into the hallway.

“It’s so dark out here we wouldn’t have been able to see clearly who it was anyway.”

“Yeah, probably not.” Megan sighed and leaned back against the wall. Her hands shook, so she pressed them behind her. “I didn’t recognize the voice, except for…” She hesitated, afraid to say it out loud. “Except for the accent.”

The other three girls looked at her knowingly–they’d all heard it, too, and understood what it meant.

Claire opened the study door and flipped on the light.

“This explains the crashing noise.”

Megan and the others peered inside. A pedestal that normally sat beside the large picture window on the other side of the room lay on its side, and the marble bust that should have been perched on top was in pieces, scattered across the wooden floor and Persian carpet.

“Obviously, whoever it was wasn’t worried about the noise.” Claire righted the pedestal. “Probably figured no one would notice, with all the other noise in the house.”

“Does everything else look okay, Megan?” Rachel asked.

Megan inspected the rest of the room, her heart growing heavier by the second.

“Yeah.” She pulled back one of the curtains and peered across the courtyard, past the reflecting pool with its Greek statues and white columns covered in glittering snow, right into the ballroom. The lights were bright, and people spun around the floor, oblivious to the fact that two of the people here to celebrate were not what they seemed. At least one was a would-be thief. Possibly something more sinister as well, if he got his hands on Bailey.

Harriet looked around the room, then at Megan, clearly puzzled.

“Um, question. What was all thatabout, anyway? What is going on around here?”

Megan opened her mouth, ready to give a brief explanation. They couldn’t keep Harriet in the dark much longer. But before she could spill a single syllable, Rachel intervened with a curt but not impolite, “Not now, Harriet.”

Harriet looked abashed–she didn’t appreciate being blown off.

“We’d best get back,” she said softly. “We’ll be missed.”

Rachel leaned against the giant desk in front of the window and gave Megan a sympathetic look.

“Missed by whom? There are a couple hundred people out there. Four more won’t make any difference.”

Harriet slowly smoothed the front of her skirt, then folded her hands.

“True. But the headmistress will be introducing the Wens soon. Megan needs to be there, to stand with her father when Professor Spencer thanks them for hosting the ball.”

“Yes, Madame Manners.” Rachel’s tone had none of her usual bluster when it came to Harriet’s slavish adherence to protocol. “I suppose we’d better. No sense hanging around here, anyway.” She put an arm around Megan’s shoulders. “Let’s just enjoy the rest of the party, and worry about it later. I’m sure whatever has been planned won’t happen in the middle of all this racket.”

No, it’ll be later tonight.

Megan let herself be led back to the entrance hall, thinking about everything that had happened since the ambassador’s arrival, trying to figure out who had been in the study. It wasn’t the same person who had given her the necklace, of that much she was sure.

She reviewed the list of suspects in her head and ran through them one by one. She had barely had a chance to interact with the ambassador or his wife, so she crossed them off for the moment. With nothing to go on, she couldn’t make any reasonable assumptions about them.

Which brought her back to her three original suspects. Ling had noticed the necklace, and was the only one who had said anything about it at all. Megan considered whether Ling might have given her the pendant. If she had, why hadn’t she come forward?

Megan gave a mental shrug–the gift had been meant to be anonymous. Ling was young and new to the ambassador’s staff. It was unlikely she had anything to do with any of this.

Chao had certainly seen the pendant, but hadn’t said anything about it. And there washis odd act in the lounge yesterday. Had he been pulling books looking for a way to open a secret entrance? That seemed more than possible. She moved him from the top of the necklace list to the top of the phone call one.

That left only one person–Xu Ping. She hadn’t had much time to talk to him, either, but he seemed a kind and wise old man. He had commented on the Athena statue, and seemed to know something about Sir Gregory. Megan didn’t know much self-defense, but she was pretty sure she could push over one elderly man and get help if he tried to get her to tell him anything about the Library of Athena. Bailey was certainly safe from Ping.

Again, without motive there was no reason to think he had given her the necklace, except that there were no other choices.

Right now, though, the necklace-giver wasn’t as important as the identity of the person who was after Bailey. She just had a feeling when she found one, she’d discover the other.

So, where did that leave her? Considering everything she knew, if she had to pick a spy out of the ambassador’s group, it would be Zhang Chao.

They reached the hall, which was even more crowded than before. Apparently, it was almost time for the formal introduction of their honored guests. Megan scanned the crowd, but didn’t see Chao. He was probably with the ambassador and his family.

Professor Spencer appeared on the staircase. She wore a lovely but simple full-skirted emerald gown and a matching wrap. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek knot, held in place with a pair of ebony sticks, and her jewelry was elegant but understated.

“She looks really beautiful,” Claire said, surprised.

“She should wear makeup more often,” Harriet added.

Rachel smirked. “Wouldn’t change her disposition. She’d still be the Dragon Lady, no matter how pretty she looked.”

Professor Spencer raised her hands, calling for quiet. Soft murmurs ran through the crowd, which was packed tightly around the giant tree, and spilled into the music room and lounge, where necks craned and people stood on tiptoe to get a better view.

“Let me thank you all for coming this evening,” Her voice was clear, but had an edge of nervousness. “And let me welcome you on behalf of St. Agatha’s College for Girls, and our host, Mr. Donald Montgomery, who has graciously opened his home to all of us for this lovely affair.”

There was a spate of polite applause, and everyone looked around for Megan’s father. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, wearing a humble but appreciative smile, his hand raised in acceptance of the ovation. Professor Spencer hadn’t mentioned Megan, and she breathed a sigh of relief at the reprieve. She was still trying to get a grip on everything that had happened, and really didn’t want to be put on display like some prize dog.

The noise died down, and the Headmistress continued.

“We have an array of guests this evening. In addition to our faculty and our lovely student body, we welcome alumnae, school governors, captains of industry, and guests of state, and are most pleased to be ringing in the New Year with all of you.

“Of course, the holiday is not the only reason we are here celebrating this evening.” She paused, one hand pressed to her stomach as if she were holding in her excitement. “We are here, of course, to welcome a prestigious visitor and his family into our midst, and a new student into the fold of St. Agatha’s, which we hope will become like family soon enough.”

“Is she serious?” Rachel muttered into Megan’s ear.

Megan smirked but was still on the lookout for Chao. She didn’t see him anywhere. He could have slipped away and be, at this moment of confusion, putting his plan into action.

She wanted to search for Bailey and warn him, but she was caught in a press of bodies, all focused on Professor Spencer. So, she just kept searching, the tension building inside her like bubbles inside a shaken bottle of soda.

Finally, she spotted him. He was on the other side of the entrance hall in a corner by the front door, whispering fervently into the ear of Xu Ping. Chao, obviously distressed, stopped and glanced around in the same nervous way he had in the lounge, as if he didn’t want to be overheard. He didn’t seem to notice Megan watching them.

Ping, on the other hand, gave no reaction to Chao’s auditory assault, his attention focused on Professor Spencer’s sideshow. Megan had a sudden, horrible thought. What if Chao and Ping were working together?

Her stomach turned to lead at the idea of such a conspiracy. She was already hesitant about stopping one person, what could she do against more?

That’s stupid. The person on the phone said me, notus.

Still, it was suspicious, unless Ping really had given Megan the necklace, and Chao had figured it out in the time since the phone call. That was unlikely. She wasn’t worried about Ping, though, so she would just keep Chao in her sights for the rest of the evening and hope for the best. If he went anywhere near Bailey, Megan would … well, she wasn’t sure what she would do, but she would do something.

Her attention was drawn again to the landing, where Professor Spencer pulled herself up to her full height and pulled her shoulders back.

“Now, without further delay, I am so proud to introduce to you Ambassador Wen Cheng, his wife, Wen Rou, and their daughter, Wen Mei-Li.”

The applause as the Wens descended the staircase was like a wave of sound, echoing off the high ceiling of the hall. The three Wens stopped on the landing in front of the statue of Athena to accept the crowd’s enthusiastic response, looking like they had stepped from the pages of a magazine. The ambassador wore a simple black-and-white tuxedo, Madame Wen a floor-length straight-skirted, high-necked dress of black satin embroidered with gold. Mei-Li’s gown was similar to her mother’s, except that it was red, a shade that perfectly complemented her dark hair and eyes.

The Wens completed their descent and were instantly sucked into the crowd and lost to the sea of satin and silk. Megan moved away and looked across the room to where she had last seen Chao, but there were too many people in the way. When a break in the mass of bodies finally opened, both Chao and Ping were gone. She stood tiptoe, trying to find them, but they had vanished.

Rachel pushed through the throng to get to Mei-Li. She wanted to introduce her to some of the nicer girls who would be in her year. But before she could reach her, Portia swooped down and spirited her away. Megan, her mind on her troubles, climbed the staircase, now looking for Mei-Li as well as Chao.

“I see her.” She pointed Rachel in the right direction. “Portia’s taking her toward the parlor.”

“Come on, we’d better go rescue her, before Portia sinks her claws into her.” Rachel grabbed her hand and dragged her along, leaving Harriet and Claire behind.

Megan and Rachel dodged and darted their way into the parlor. Mei-Li had been planted by Portia on the loveseat. There was a polite but distant look on her face, her eyes glazed. Portia and her friends hovered around her like vultures.

Mei-Li’s face lit up when she saw Rachel and Megan. She reached for them and pulled them closer.

“Portia, I think you know Megan and Rachel, two of my newest and dearest friends.”

Portia’s gaze went from Mei-Li to Megan and Rachel, and the wide smile she wore slipped just slightly.

“Of course.”

“Girls, sit down and talk with us.” Mei-Li scooted sideways. Her lips smiled, but her eyes begged, Please.

Megan did not want to sit with Portia and her crowd of snobs. She would much rather slap the lot of them for picking on Claire. But she managed to restrain herself, especially when there was a chance her teachers and father would see.

Rachel must have felt the same.

“We can’t, really. We just came to fetch you, because my mom really wants to meet you. She’s been to China, you know, and was just mad about it.”

Mei-Li stood gracefully and said goodbye to the older girls. Portia, seething beneath her refined façade, said she hoped Mei-Li would return once her social obligations–she glared at Megan and Rachel–were finished.

Rachel, Megan and Mei-Li left the snobs to ponder what had just happened and went back into the hall.

“Thank you so much,” Mei-Li said gratefully. “Those girls were so…”

“Yes, we know,” Rachel nodded. “Don’t sweat it, glad to rescue you. Let’s grab Harriet and Claire and find a quiet corner.”

“Megan, are you all right?” Mei-Li’s face was drawn into a mask of concern. “You don’t look very happy, like you’d rather be somewhere else.”

Megan jumped at the sound of her name. She had been on a sort of autopilot, allowing Rachel to sweep her along while she picked through the conversation in the study again. She shook her head and put on what she hoped was a convincing happy face. There was no reason to worry Mei-Li.

“No, sorry, I’m fine. Just a bit tired, I guess. It’s been such a long day.”

“You didn’t take a nap today like I told you to, did you?” Harriet scolded as she approached. “I’ve been going to events like this for years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s take a nap in the afternoon.”

“I didn’t have time,” Megan said, irritated at Harriet’s obtuseness. She knew she should be more forgiving, but her nerves hummed like she was attached to an electrical current. She wanted to run through the house calling for Chao at the top of her lungs. Maybe it would disperse this feeling of unbearable pressure inside her.

“Relax, will you?” Rachel muttered into her ear.

Megan whipped her head around, her voice a low hiss.

“How can you say that to me? You heard that phone call. Whatever they’re planning, it’s happening tonight, and we’re not even sure who it is.”

Rachel put a calming hand on her arm.

“Yes, but we know more than we did. No one is going to try to hurt you, not as long as you stick with us and keep yourself surrounded by people. The Library is safe for the moment, too–they don’t know where the entrance is, and even if they did, they couldn’t get to it in the middle of this bash.”

“What about Bailey?” Megan said. “He might be in trouble.”

“Bailey can handle himself. The staff’s on the watch, too. So, keep a weather eye out, but try to enjoy the party. Okay?”

Rachel made a lot of sense, although it didn’t stop Megan’s nerves jangling. Chao was off doing who-knew-what. And despite Rachel’s assurances, she was worried for Bailey’s safety. He would never reveal the secret entrance to the library, she was sure of that. No matter what they did to him.

Not exactly a comforting thought.

Claire must have been reading her mind.

“Rachel’s right, he can take care of himself.” She grasped Megan’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “Bailey’s tougher than we give him credit for.”

A high-pitched scream cut off Megan’s reply. It came from the direction of the music room. Instantly, everyone’s head swiveled in that direction.

Megan’s insides turned to water. She hoped the scream was because someone had dropped a tray and covered a guest in sparkling cider or caviar. She prayed for the ruin of someone’s gown.

Her prayer went unanswered.

“Someone help! I think he’s dead!”
