After losing her job at a swanky Seattle art gallery, single mother Autumn Cole reluctantly returns to her tiny hometown of Fairfield, Washington. Autumn’s disgruntled twelve-year old son isn’t thrilled about going from hip to hick, but Autumn’s got it worse. She’ll get to resume her role as the town drunk’s daughter.
When his public divorce turns ugly, history teacher Henry Tobler decides to disappear. He finds exactly what he’s looking for amidst Fairfield’s quirky residents, but when the woman he’s pined for since college shows up and nearly breaks his nose in front of a classroom full of twelve-year-olds, his newfound peace threatens to crumble.
Autumn cannot believe Henry is in Fairfield, or that fate chose such a miserable time to drop him back in her life. She and her father face a crisis decades in the making. Can rediscovering love–and herself–with her “what if” guy teach Autumn to forgive before it’s too late?

FROM THE REVIEWER…This is a book that snuck up on me. I had set myself up thinking I was just going to read a lighthearted and fun book. Don’t get me wrong it is both of those things. But it is also emotional. Autumn Cole hasn’t been home in years. She avoided her hometown because of her childhood. Growing up as the daughter of the town drunk isn’t easy. She comes back home to take care of her ailing father and to also help her and her son get back on their feet. The emotional part is the relationship that Autumn has with her father. I see parts of mine and my father’s relationship in their‘s. The climatic scenes that the two of them have brought me to tears. Through the book the author was able to find humor and still keep the but light and not weighed down by all the emotion.
The funniest scenes happen between Autumn and her What If Guy Henry. A man she left years ago because she was pregnant with another man’s child. Even though it happened before they met ,she still felt that he would not be able to handle it. Fate stepped in and put them in the same small town at the same time. Henry is now a teacher and happens to be her son, Elliot’s teacher. When she see’s him again it isn’t pretty, but it’s still funny. She ends up busting his nose and all the kids are screaming. She tries to help but makes it worst. She always ends up being clumsy when she is around him. Usually it’s in front of an audience too. They are able to get back on track and start over.
Throughout the book Autumn reconnects with those she had left behind years ago. She also learns that small town life isn’t so bad. You don’t have to travel far to live your dreams. I loved this book. I recommend it to anyone who loves to read.
