ThunderandBloodWhen Sarah Ingram and her sister Christine left Thunder Bay on a chilly November afternoon, they thought that they were going on a weekend getaway, leaving their problems behind. What they didn’t realize was that they would end up in a world that was, in many ways, very different from their own, but in others eerily familiar. Separated almost at once, the two women found themselves struggling to come to terms with the reality of their situation. How could they tell friend from foe? How did this world become so different from the one they knew? Was it possible that there could be more to the vampire stories from their own world than simple myth? – FROM THE BOOK BACK

AUTHOR INTERVIEW…

Which author(s) inspired you to write your particular genre growing up?

I read a lot of Anne Rice in the past.  I haven’t actually read a tonne of vampire books, but I did read Twilight last fall.  When I wrote Thunder and Blood I think that the vampires just came to me as something that went well with the fog.  I read a lot of different genres and authors, depending on my mood and the season.  What I really love is when I find an author that I like who has a lot of books out (especially series) so that I can collect and read them all.  Right now I have full collections of Dean Koontz, Orson Scott Card, Robert Jordan, Patricia Cornwell, and a few others.

How did you come up with the idea for Thunder and Blood and how long did it take you to complete it start to finish?

I first came up with the idea when I was a teenager, driving the back roads around Thunder Bay, probably thinking about boys at the time.  I drove into this incredibly thick fog which was exactly the same as that described in my book.  At the time I was terrified that I would go off the road or be hit by oncoming traffic, but after I got home I thought about how cool it was.  It stuck with me and became my inspiration for Thunder and Blood.

I had a false start writing the book when I was about 24, and that draft was lost during my move to Germany when I was 30.  In November 2007, I decided to participate in Nanowrimo and used that idea to fulfill the 50,000 word in 30 days requirement for the challenge.  So the writing took me 30 days.  I didn’t pick it up again or even read it at all for almost a year, then I edited it over about five months.  So the answer to your question could be anywhere from 30 days to 10 years. :P

Are you a full time novelist or do you wear another “hat” during the day?

I’ve had to stop working due to some health issues, so I’ve been staying home and just doing novel stuff for the last three month.  Before that I was a teacher.  I taught English in Germany and Computers/Business here in Canada.  Writing has quickly grown into a full-time job for me lately, although I’m sure glad my husband has a fantastic job because it sure doesn’t pay like a full-time job.  :P

Do you have a special writing area where you write your stories or do you write anywhere?

I generally write at my desk, but I take a notebook with me wherever I go when I’m working on a book.  That way, if I have a free moment, or an instant of inspiration, I can write by hand.

Are you currently writing anything right now and can we get a sneak peek?

Right now I’m just finishing up a short story that takes place just before Thunder and Blood and will tie in with both Thunder and Blood and its sequel, Thunder and Ice.  I’m not done writing Thunder and Ice yet, but will start working on it on November 1st, for the 2009 Nanowrimo challenge.  This year I’m planning to do 75,000 words in 30 days.  It should be interesting and definitely challenging, as I’ll still be on my tour at that time.

What made you decide to take the 30 day writing challenge and what made you think to finish this story instead of creating a brand new one for it?

    Hi Molly:

While I may have based Sarah somewhat off of the Stacey I was when I was 24, I don’t feel like her at all anymore. Now when I think of my characters, it’s more of as an observer than an actual participant in their lives.

    Hi Kimberly,

My decision to participate in Nanowrimo 2007 was a last minute impulse. I read on a friend’s blog about it and decided the day before Halloween to participate. The problem then became what to write. I picked a plot that had been in my mind, mostly undeveloped, for ten years. My first attempt at writing it was largely insubstantial, so it was never like rewriting, it was more like taking something that had the first half of chapter one in point form and going on from there.

  4. Hi Stacey,
Have you ever though of, or are you going to write in different genres?
Are you enjoying your book tour so far? Whats been your favorite part of it?
    Thanks

  5. Stacey Voss says:

    Hi JoJo,

I will definitely be writing in different genres in the future. In fact, this is the first vampire-based fiction I’ve written. In my early twenties I wrote a lot of bizarre stuff that was really dark. I don’t really consider genre when I write, I just write what comes.

As for the book tour, I am really enjoying it. I think my favourite part is some of the unexpected questions that I get. It’s an exhausting process, and a lot more work than I thought it would be, but I really enjoy the different blogs.

  9. Stacey Voss says:

    Hi Sheila,

Great question! I think I’m still discovering all of the things I wish I had known before embarking on this wonderful journey. I think number one would have to be to hire a professional editor before putting your work out there. Whether you’re independently publishing, or submitting your work to a publishing company, a professional editor is a must. I taught English grammar for three years and I’m still finding mistakes. It’s embarassing and unprofessional.

    Hi Haley,

I usually have a few litres of something to drink with me, but I rarely have food at my desk when I’m writing. Generally I’m so focused that eating would distract me. If I have anything at all at my desk, it might be hard candies or something like that.

  12. Cherry says:

My question: Does any of your characters resemble or patterned after a real life person? Family members? Friends? Celebrities?

  15. Stacey Voss says:

    Hi Cherry,

Sarah was patterned after the me I was when I was 24. She’s a lot more insecure than I am now and doesn’t like her self very much.

Adelaide is patterned appearance-wise after my best friend.

Other than those two, my characters are just themselves.

  16. Stacey Voss says:

    Hi Benita.

Well, I’m only doing book stuff at home right now. Before that I was teaching business and computers, so those students weren’t really trying to be writers. Before January this year, I was teaching Business English in Germany and they were primarily just focused on learning the language.

Also, I’m pretty shy about talking about my book to people I know. Whenever people ask, I’ll admit that I wrote the book, but I try not to bring it up first.

  17. Stacey Voss says:

Well, I’m done for the day. I want to thank Farrah for having me as a guest here today and everyone who participated in the Q&A period. I’ll subscribe to the comments feed so that I can answer a few questions from people who are late ;)
