The Brief History of the Dead…4.22.09

briefhistoryofthedead"All the residents of the City have recently died, and they will remain in the City only as long as someone still living on Earth remembers them.  On Earth, however, the population has been devastated by a terrible pandemic.  Laura Byrd, isolated at an Antarctic research station, is running low on supplies and has only her memories to comfort her.  The people of the City realize Laura is the common thread binding them together.  But Laura, who may be the only person to have survived the pandemic, is running out of time - and her memories are fading." - from the back of the novel

THE BOOK FAERY REVIEWS…Welcome to a new world or city of the dead; a city where the dead live as if they were still alive. It is here that the dead get to live a second life for another 20-50 years until they are taken to their everlasting home in the afterlife. It is thought that the dead still exist until they are no longer remembered by those that are still alive. As an epidemic hits Earth and people are dying, the dead in the city are disappearing. The few left are trying to understand why they are still there and what connects them when they realize that Laura Byrd is the connection. The dead begin to panic when they realize she’s all that’s left and attempt at sending vibrations of memories to her as she struggles for life. You can’t help but want to keep Laura going and wanting to get to know those from her past better.

Kevin Brockmeier will definitely have you thinking during and afterwards. Regardless of your culture, religious or spiritual background, this novel will have you thinking. It will have you wondering about whether you impacted enough people in life on Earth to be remembered a long time afterwards and wondering where you will go after you die. Do you go straight to Heaven, do you go to Hell, do you go to a holding ground until judgment day, or do you simply just go to another city until you are no longer remembered? Do the dead help us to remember things from our past to keep us alive in the world we live in today or is it really those that are alive that keep the dead going? Hmmm… ;-)

About The Book Faery

Farrah is from the Raleigh, North Carolina area and married to her high school sweetheart. She's a 30-something mom to 3 crazy yet loveable kids who keep her constantly on her toes. Books can be found in every room in the house and bags as well. Reading is done every moment she gets the chance and a typical afternoon of fun would often find her and the 3 kiddos at a local bookstore or library hunting for the next book. She's currently working towards her goal to one day owning a cafe/bookstore in a historic downtown area where it's all about the reader's experience...community, atmosphere and the love of books.
